Dash For Cash Derby-G2
FAMOUS CHIEF
by Michael Compton
Famous Chief has proven to be an astute claim for his current connections—owner Ramon Calvillo Jr. and trainer Eric Long.
Taken for $30,000 on April 29 at Remington Park, Famous Chief returned to the races on June 12 at Sam Houston Race Park for his
new owner and trainer and promptly finished second, beaten by just a nose in the Sam Houston Texas Bred Championship. The sorrel gelding is now a stakes winner, following a determined score in the $205,200 Dash for Cash Derby-G2 at Lone Star Park on Oct. 2.
After a narrow victory in his Sept. 18 Dash for Cash Derby trial, fastest qualifier Famous Chief was sent off as a 7-1 shot in the main event. Ridden by Gilbert Ortiz, Famous Chief grabbed the lead away from the gate in the 440-yard event. He opened a 1/2-length margin on his rivals in the lane and proved best late, holding at bay a late rally from Won Famous Dash to score by 3/4-lengths.
