Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship-G1
POWERFUL FAVORITE
by Tracy Gantz
Powerful Favorite put himself in excellent company by winning the $125,000 Robert Boniface Invitational Championship-G1 on
Oct. 9. He joins World Champion Freaky as the only horses to win the Boniface and the Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship-G1 in the same year.
When the gate sprung open, jockey Eduardo Nicasio got Powerful Favorite away in second. The gelding never
gave up, collaring Apollitical
Pence and holding off a slew
of others to win by a neck in
:21.544 for 440 yards.
“He’s such a cool customer,” said Christopher O’Dell, who trains Powerful Favorite for Connie Rosenthal’s Rosenthal Ranch LLC. “We had trouble with his feet, but we figured out how to fix his feet a little bit. I had a feeling he would do well tonight.”
PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G2
Between the McKinzie and the Boniface, Powerful Favorite journeyed to Ruidoso Downs. He won an allowance race, finished second in the Mr Jet Moore Handicap-G2, and ran third in the All American Gold Cup-G1 there.
Rosenthal purchased Powerful Favorite for $90,000 at the 2017 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. He was the last horse her husband, Bob, picked out before his death the next year.
“We always had small little claimers,” said Connie. “I hope I’m representing him and our horses well by letting them run where they need to run.”
James Markum and Dr. Steve Burns bred Powerful Favorite in California from multiple stakes winner Remember Me Rose. The mare has produced 19 winners from 25 starters, including four stakes winners and three
stakes-placed runners. Three yearling full siblings to Powerful Favorite sold this year for $520,000, $450,000, and $400,000.
Valentin Zamudio owns and trains second- place Other World (Foose-Celestial Being TB). Ruben Lozano rode the gelding. Apollitical Pence (Apollitical Jess-Send City), owned
by Dunn Ranch finished third. Armando Cervantes rode him for trainer Monty Arrossa.
Fourth through seventh were Nomadic (Favorite Cartel-Moonlight Corona), Chocolatito (Favorite Cartel-Enjoy The
Walk), Really First Down (First Down Dash- Really A Corona), and Cattail Cove (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella). You Can Run (Favorite Cartel-You Can Fly) and Circle City (Favorite Cartel-Moonlight Corona) dead-heated for eighth, followed by Bail Czech (Corona Czech- Letty Bail Regis Out).
with the winner but fell a bit short. Trained by Scott Willoughby, she now has three wins from 14 starts, was second five times and third once.
Trained by Mike Casselman, Baccarat Attack (Favorite Cartel-Baccarat Bar) came into the finals with the fifth fastest qualifying time. The sorrel gelding banked the third place money for owner Steve D. Burns. Jockey Cruz Mendez was handling the reins. This bring the geldings race record to two wins from nine starts, second one time, and third three times, and he was a finalist in the Governor’s Cup Derby-G2 earlier this year.
Go To Girl (Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose), Copauinos Best (Docs Best Card- Copauino Diva), Katella Avenue (Foose-Katie Katella), Milan Red (Corona Cartel-Whatta Knockout), Expedited (Favorite Cartel-
Katie Katella) and Bf Outfoosed (Foose-BF Outrageous) completed the order of finish.

       COLLEGE SCANDAL
by Danny Camp
There was a racy scandal at Los Alamitos Race Course in the running of the $109,760 PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G2.
Second fastest qualifier College Scandal came away with a 1/2-length win on Oct. 2 in the 400-yard stakes.
The filly scampered away from the 9-post and the duel was on. Jockey Ramon Sanchez was in the saddle guiding and encouraging the filly, and the pair crossed the wire on top, stopping the timer at :19.803
to earn a 91 speed index.
Trained by Juan Aleman, College Scandal also earned the first place check worth $47,040, making her lifetime earnings equal $95,016 for owner Robert Kirk Gentry/ Gentry Farms and her race record stands at four wins out of 17 starts.
Gentry Farms bred College Scandal out of multiple stakes winner
Fovee, a half-sister to stakes winner Funny Munny. Fovee won the 2011 Mildred N Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1 and the Los Alamitos Distaff Challenge-G3. She has produced 14 foals, including stakes winner Lovely Cuvee, who won the 2020 Evergreen Park Distaff Challenge at Grande Prairie. College Scandal is her second stakes winner and top earner.
Her second dam is Fodice, who won the Chicks Beduino Handicap
and finished third in the California Derby Challenge-G3.
