Livewire. The three-year-old Paint gelding picked up his first stakes victory in his 11th career out on May 21 at Sam Houston Race Park, winning the $24,250 Colors of Houston Derby for Paints and Appaloosas.
Trained by Gary Jacobs, Secret Livewire made
a driving finish to secure his breakthrough stakes victory. The gelding broke fifth from the No. 7 gate and was running in the middle of the pack, working his way up to second as then-leader Smithworks entered the stretch, and then he chased down his foe and hit the wire first by a 1/2-length.
Luis Vivanco had the riding assignment, completing his 350-yard trip in :18.364 while running into a 15 mph headwind.
2LD Farm LLC owns Secret Livewire, who made his third overall trip to the winner’s circle and notched his first win in three starts this year. The $10,791 prize for the victory improved the gelding’s total earnings to $44,916.
Lisa Lucido bred Secret Livewire out of Moonlight Who, a 2013 Thoroughbred mare.
Smithworks APHA (Painted Turnpike-Shesa Mighty Chick), a winner of multiple stakes and the heavy post-time favorite at 1-2 odds, finished second for owner Bryan Hawk and trainer Lewis “Tooter” Jordan. Cody Smith had the riding assignment.
Dos Pennies APHA (Dash Master Jess QH-Double Dashing) finished third for Sergio Pena and Jerome Lopez. Trained by Jorge Barrera, the gelding had Victor Urieta, Jr. aboard.
