Mexico Derby
REY ALFREDO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
 There were 33 three-year-old Mexican
bred runners that participated in the five qualifying trials for the finals of the 300-yard Mexico Derby, which were held on April 10 at the Hipodromo de las Americas. The 10 finalists returned to the track two weeks later to dispute a purse of $984,512 pesos ($48,111 U.S. approx.).
In the trials, it was Rey Alfredo from the Cuadra Baldeli who obtained the best time of :14.913. It should be noted that the same barn owns La Chamulita, who was placed second in the trials, as well as Solo One and Perla Cartel, with the ninth and tenth fastest qualifying times, respectively.
This powerful entry was a wide favorite at
the betting window, with Rey Alfredo given the preference. He broke from the 10-post under José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, who was responsible for his last four recent successes including the victory in the Mexican Breeders Derby Challenge.
In the finals, Joey Garoo AT stumbled, while Jamaikina interfered with Perla Cartel, also affecting Solo One, by moving to his left, which cost him a disqualification when the stewards reviewed the race.
Everyone did their best, but it was Rey Alfredo who had a good start and who
continued to dominate the field by running freely on the right side of the track to reach the wire in :14.88 (SI 99), 1 3/4-lengths ahead of his rival Joey Garoo AT.
With this victory, his
record is now 10-0-0 from 11
starts. It should be noted that
at two years of age, he won the
respective Mexico Futurity in
addition to the consolation of the Subasta Selecta Futurity. In the current season, he has been dominant by winning the two derbies that have been contested for horses of Mexican breeding, honoring the title of “King” (Rey) that he holds in his name.
In addition, he added $413,495 pesos to his bank account ($20,206 U.S. approx.), which already exceeds 2.9 million pesos.
Bred in Mexico by Rachuán Suárez, owner
of the stallion Fearless Fritz and the mare Proud Corrina (by Corona Cartel), Rey Alfredo is owned by the Cuadra Baldeli, being under the conditioning of José Guadalupe García “Lupillo”, who is officially represented by the young trainer Nahum de Jesús Lagunes Montero.
Joey Garoo AT (Kangaroofirst-Mi Gata, Senior Solo) placed second
for the third consecutive time behind Rey Alfredo. The gray colt had Alejandro Almazán in command and he belongs to the Cuadra San Luis Aculco, was bred by Adelfo Toledano Montero, and was saddled by Fernando Figueroa Romero.
BR Sueno (Southern Corona-Ruanna Bodanna, Tac It Like A Man) was third under Mario Alberto López Marmolejo.
He is owned by the Cuadra Bronco Rider, trained by Ismael Parra Martínez and bred by Maximiliano Pérez Correa.
After the disqualification of Jamaikina from seventh to tenth place, the other finishing positions were in the following order: La Chamulita (Bullish One-La Paz), Kiss Pop Pop (Cartels Pop Pop-Holland Kiss), AS Tormenta (Palm Beach-Kool Showgirl), Solo One (Senior Solo-One Heart), SE Cartel Wine (Cartel Success-Wine Down), Perla Cartel (Danny Cartel-Six Royal Alibis) and Jamaikina (Danny Cartel-Shimmer Time).
