West Texas Maturity-G3
JACKY MARTIN 21
by Danny Camp
Named after one of the greatest jockeys to ever put his foot in a stirrup, the four-year- old gelding Jacky Martin 21 came away with
his third career win and first in stakes company in the $128,500 Grade 3 West Texas Maturity at Sunland Park on March 9.
He ran second in his Feb. 15 trial heat and came into the finals with the fourth fastest time. He shined when the
spotlight was on in the finals,
overcoming a hard bump at the start. With the guidance of jockey J. R. Ramirez, he dug down deep to win by 1/2-length in :19.260 to earn a 97 speed index.
The gelding now sports a race record of three wins from twelve starts.
Jacky Martin 21 brought home the $60,395 winner’s share of the purse for owner 21 Partnership and trainer
Mardi Gras Derby
Ricardo Armendariz, boosting his earnings $106,565. The gelding was bred in New Mexico by 21 Partnership.
“Even though he’s only won three races, this guy is very consistent,” said Armendariz. “He lays it on the line every time. He pulled up great ate good and strutted around his stall. He knew he won. This is the kind of horse that
doesn’t like to be messed with, he’s all business.”
The trainer went on to give credit to his team saying, “This is truly a team effort from top to bottom and we have a great team. We knew we had a great chance if we got a good break. Jacky didn’t break good in the trials and ran second, but in the finals he got away good. When J.R. Ramirez asked him down the lane he hit another gear and it was all over.”
When asked about the future Ricardo said, “We’re going to give him a break and then let him tell us what’s next. There are a few good races in Ruidoso, maybe the Gold Cup.”
EBW Gypsy (Desirio-EBW Obsession) finished second under Daniel Amaya for own- ers Ernie & Brenda Wood and trainer Juan Gonzalez. Boogies Special Dash (Walk Thru Fire-Boogie Special) and Adrian Ramos were third for owner Kenneth Ruthardt and trainer Jason Giles. Followed by Believe Me Irene (Valiant Hero-Financial Leverage), Papaws Paint (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Heavenly Trip), Jolla Especial (Adrians Jolla-Kool Mandy), Secretzzoom (No Secrets Here- Suzzoom), Bobby Elvis (Valiant Hero-Tates Creek) and Walcott (Tee Cos-Jess Maganette). Commander N Chief B & Jess Bein The Hero were scratched.

Followed by Zoomin Patriot (Jet Black Patriot-Zippy Zoomer), Five Bar Perry (Five Bar Cartel-Miss Classy Perry), Appolitical Black (Jet Black Patriot-I Jess Wear Nike), Louisiana Lighting (Coronas Leaving You-Lias Comet) and Royal Renegade (Heza Fast Dash- Royalty Gone Wild-TB). Thank goodness for cell phones. Breeder Tony Doughtie was at a baseball game when TDZ Louisiana Toast won the $120,782 Mardi Gras Derby at Louisiana Downs on March 16 to collect his first stakes victory.
“We watched the race on our phones,” Doughtie said.
Trained by Alonso Neri, TDZ Louisiana Toast qualified the fastest for the Mardi Gras Derby during the Feb. 24 trials when he went wire-to-wire for a 1
3/4-length win.
TDZ Louisiana Toast went off as the 7-10 favorite in the finals with Manuel Gutierrez aboard. The brown gelding proved much the best, receiving every call
and winning easily by 2 3/4-lengths. They completed the 400 yards in :19.478, posting a 106 speed index.
“He really turned it on at the end,” said Doughtie.
“He placed in the Mardi Gras Futurity last year,” the breeder said. TDZ Louisiana Toast also finished second in the 2018 Louisiana Championships Day Juvenile-G2 and 2019 Billy Montgomery Stakes.
Doughtie bred TDZ Louisiana Toast in Louisiana from winner Shes A Royal Toast. “I’ve always liked Toast To Dash,” he said. “She was a Toast To Dash on the top side and Royal Quick Dash on the bottom side. I said that will work. I
bought her privately as a yearling. “I have a nice Sir Runaway
Dash yearling filly out of
her. We didn’t get to breed her back last year. This year we’re breeding her back to Jess Louisiana Blue (the sire of TDZ Louisiana Toast).”
Doughtie has bred
and raced many top
stakes winners, including $493,459-earner Jess A Fast Dasher and $187,768-earner Stel My Corona. He sold
