                                Mexican Bred Distaff Derby
AS MACHO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
This was the first derby of the season and took place on March 10 at 350 yards. Previously, the qualification races were carried out, obtaining the 10 finalists, for which a sum of $973,600 pesos (approx. $49,505 US) were raised to be distributed proportionally among all the participants.
True to his career, which led him to be designated as the 2018 AQHA Mexican Champion, the gelding AS Macho was the one who obtained the best time in the trials with :17.190, and being the preferred option to win at the betting windows. It was a preference that he made sure to sustain at the track, team-
ing with his usual rider José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, who was also awarded Champion Rider for Classics in Mexico in 2018.
The start was good for everyone, with the opportunity being seized by Juanita Cartel and the aforementioned AS Macho. On the way, Danny Cool drifted towards the rail and interfered on the path of Jabulani Runaway Tordilla, leaving her behind the group. Meanwhile, Juanita Cartel settled vigorously on the track, obeying the command of Rogelio Sáenz, and AS Macho followed a hesitant
route, first outward and then inward. It was his power-
ful stride and the skill of Ambrosio that allowed him to define the race in his favor in the final yards, dominating the filly by a neck’s differ- ence. AS Macho stopped the clock in :17.25, posting a 89 speed index.
With this Derby victory,

Siller Berain at Rancho Agua Linda in Nueva Rosita Coahuila, he became the runner with the most earnings in the history of the Hipódromo de las Américas, with a figure of more than 5.5 million pesos, a product of his triumphs in the Garañones Futurity, Desafío Crianza Mexicana and now the Desafio Crianza Mexicana Derby, plus second places in the México Futurity and Subasta Selecta.
Owned by Cuadra Falcón, conditioned by ex-rider Ismael Parra Martínez, although
saddled by trainer Víctor Jarillo Sánchez, with this victory the sorrel gelding shows that he is coming for another glorious season, endorsing the championships that were recently granted to him by the AQHA and the AMCCCCM.
Juanita Cartel (Danny Cartel-Toles) finished second under Rogelio Sáenz for owner Rancho El Suspiro and
trainer Gonzalo Bastida Pacheco.
In third place came Champion LA Rapid
King Judea (Rapid Fire Jess-Queen Judea) and Yair Daniel Báez Soto for owner Cuadra Los Gavilanes and trainer Rubén Romo García.
