                                Dreaming Sweet Handicap
STRIVER
by Tracy Gantz
Juan Carlos Chavez spends his working life as
the assistant trainer to Scott Willoughby at Los Alamitos. But he also owns a couple of horses in the barn. Striver, winner of the $15,000 Dreaming Sweet Handicap on March 1 was his first, and she has performed so well that he was able to add another horse to his stable.
“She’s truly been a dream that has become a real- ity,” said Chavez.
As the 6-1 fourth choice in the 330-yard Dreaming Sweet Handicap, Striver went right to the front, despite lugging in early. Ridden by Vinnie Bednar, she never relinquished the lead, winning wire-to-wire by 1 1/2-lengths in :16.724 for a 96 speed index.
Chavez bought Striver for $17,000 at the 2017 Los Alamitos Equine Sale from Dr. Ed Allred, who bred the filly in California. Striver previously won the 2018 Stotz Equipment Stakes and was second in the Kindergarten Futurity-G2.
Allred bred and raced Motherless, the dam of Striver. The mare has produced nine winners in 13 starters, including stakes winner Conquer All and stakes-placed Striven. Allred raced the second dam, graded stakes winner Ronas Sound, during the latter part of her career.
Jesus Ayala piloted Singles Cruise (Favorite Cartel- Going Single) to second for owners Barry and Janice Sather & trainer Paul Jones. Singles Cruise won the 2018 Canada Cup Futurity-G3, Jerry Stojan Memorial, and Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge. Callender (Kiddy Up-Pie Maid), owned and trained by Valentin Zamudio and also bred by Allred, finished third. Ruben Lozano rode the colt, who ran third in the 2018 California Breeders Freshman Stakes. Followed by Cava Yee Tah (Sports Cartel-Spanish Sola Mark), I M Brazilian (First Down Dash-Dinastia Toll Brz), and Jodee B Valiant (Mighty B Valiant-Jo Dee Chic).
Rossmoor Handicap
CANDY ZIP TB
by Tracy Gantz
Thoroughbred trainer Bob Bean started out hot- walking Jaklin Klugman for actor Jack Klugman when that Thoroughbred colt went to the 1980 Kentucky Derby. Jaklin Klugman finished third to the filly Genuine Risk. Bean won his first stakes at Los Alamitos when his Thoroughbred Candy Zip cap- tured the $15,000 Rossmoor Handicap on Mar. 16.
Breaking third under jockey Ramon Guce, Candy Zip raced three wide on the turn of the 870- yard Rossmoor Handicap. The chestnut colt took command and then drew clear to win by 4-lengths in :44.453, posting a 104 speed index.
Candy Zip was making his second start at Los Alamitos, having previously finished second in an allowance race. He began his career at Saratoga in New York. Bean, who trains Candy Zip and co-owns him with Alan Mindell, claimed the colt for $4,000 at Golden Gate Fields in January.
Sugar Maple Farm bred Candy Zip in New York from the unraced City Zip mare Zip Gun. Candy Zip is the first Thoroughbred winner in two starters for Zip Gun, a half-sister to stakes winner Shot
Gun Pennie.
Run Raging Rhino Run (FDD Dynasty-Love
That Six) ran second under Minor Arana for owner Dan Wilson and trainer Felix Gonzalez. Run Raging Rhino Run earlier this year captured the Barbra B Handicap, and he ran second in the 2018 Snowbound Superstar Handicap.
Christian Aragon rode El Koreano TB (City Place-Bridge To Gold) to third for owner Ashley Garcia and trainer Angela Aquino. A six-year-old gelding, El Koreano has won at Los Alamitos, Del Mar, and Golden Gate Fields.
Completing the field were St. Reno TB (Awesome Again-Ms. Deep Pockets), Great Ma Neri TB (Reagan Republican-Geocel’s Vismic) and Bound To Bet (Snowbound TB-Bet She Flys).
Danville Station Handicap
JUST WALK BY
by Tracy Gantz
Just Walk By became a stakes winner in the $15,000 Danville Station Handicap at Los Alamitos on March 8.
The third choice at 6-1 in the five-horse field, Just Walk By broke from the inside post in second and quickly went to the front.
With Jesus Ayala in the irons, the 4-year-old sorrel filly held off all challengers to win by a head in :17.800 for 350 yards, posting an 89 speed index.
Mike Casselman trains Just Walk By for
owner Dr. Steve Burns, who bred Just Walk By
in California. The filly ran second in the 2017 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity-G2 and third in the 2018 Four Forty Blast Handicap. The Danville Station was her first start of 2019.
“We didn’t have a race for her, and then
this handicap came up and it fit her well,” said Casselman of the race for three year old and older fillies and mares. “She needed to run. She had been out a couple of months.”
Burns bred Just Walk By from multiple Grade 1-placed Babe On The Fly. The mare has produced 23 winners from 30 starters, including seven other stakes winners and five stakes-placed runners.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Time To Leave (Walk Thru Fire-Departing) finished second under Jockey Vinnie Bednar for trainer Scott Willoughby. Time To Leave most recently won the 2019 Denim N Diamonds Handicap.
Ruben Lozano piloted Newport Coaster (TR Dasher-Wave Babe) to third for owner Herminia Gutierrez and trainer Justin Clark. A 5-year-old mare, Newport Coaster ran second and third in back-to-back editions of the California Breeders 550 Sophomore Stakes in 2017 and 2018.
Followed by La Rusa (Walk Thru Fire-Corona Fria) and Strawfinders Jessee (One Sweet Jess- Strawfinder). Love To Reason BR was scratched.
