Francisco Pasquel Classic
CHARLY CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translated by Eduardo Silveyra
The classic in honor of the horseman Francisco Pasquel was contested until Sept. 2018 within the Quarter Horse Breeders Cup, but this season started in Feb. and on the date that corresponded to the Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal Classic, which now will be part of the aforementioned cup.
In addition, a new race was introduced
in the competition calendar, the running of the Francisco Pasquel Classic in a short 110 yards for horses three years and older born in Mexico. There were 10 individuals registered, which brought together a prize of $413,000 pesos (approx. $21,418).
Among them was Charly Cartel, the holder of the current track record of :6.82 established on Oct. 14, 2018, who was the favorite at the betting windows to win this race.
At the start, Divina Jess rose up, while
at the far right of the gates, Puente Villa
and Lion Cartel blocked the path of Dancer Fishers, leaving him without an opportunity. Charly Cartel lagged behind a bit and had
to force himself thoroughly to recover, reach out, and dominate Fearless Jessi and at the same time defend against the onslaught that Lafishingonabugsmoon undertook on his right.
The exciting race lasted only :6.83, which was good for a 110 speed index, one hun- dredth of a second more than the track record time. It was Charly Cartel who dominated the action with José Manuel Cisneros aboard.
This is the first classic won by the colt, after having placed in the finals of the Garañones Futurity and Subasta Selecta Futurity, as well as in the Selecta Auction Derby. His record is now stands 17-6-4-6, with earnings close to 1,370,000 pesos.
Trained by Enrique Carrión Álvarez, Charly Cartel is a product of the
cross of the stallion Watchful
Vigilance with the mare
Chata Corona. The colt is owned by Cuadra Díaz de León and for this commit- ment was saddled by Juan Miguel Cruz Galván.
Members of the Executive Committee of the American Quarter Horse Association were in attendance in the winner’s circle, including Stan Weaver, Butch Wise, Anna Morrison and Sierra Kane.
Second place was
obtained by Lafishingonabugsmoon (Nofishinonafullmoon-A Special Ladybug) under Yair Daniel Báez Soto for owner Cuadra Los Gavilanes and trainer Rubén Romo García.
Fearless Jessie (Fearless Fritz-Cash For Jessie) and J. Ortega were third for owner Cuadra Leny and trainer Alejandro Martínez Delgadillo.
Followed by Mons Tango Glass (Teller Tango-First Under Glass), Power Heart
(Four Six Power-Break Your Heart), VGDashingromance (Rare Leader-Takin Romance), Puente Villa (Natovas Prince-Some Kinda Dreamer), Lion Cartel (Metallic Lion- Dash Corona), Divina Jess (Royal Invasor-Jess Clear This) and Dancer Fishers (Ze Dancer- Natalia Fishers).
