five others in the Derby field. They also stand Eye Am King and have been involved with the Mr Jess Perry stallion from the very beginning.
“Eye Am King’s mother was Eye For Corona,” said Mac. “We bought her at the Heritage Sale, and she was carrying Eye Am King. He was actually the high seller in 2017. He brought $300,000 at Ruidoso.”
Unfortunately, Eye Am King started only once and was injured.
“We lost Jesse James Jr that same year, and he was a Mr Jess Perry stallion,” Mac said. “We were trying to buy another Mr Jess Perry stallion. I happened to call these people who bought Eye Am King from us, and I asked them what they were going to do with him.”
The colt wasn’t going to be able to run again, so Mac bought him back, with the understanding that the owner would receive three breedings a year as long as the Murrays own him. Given how Eye Am King’s stallion career is going, that was a win for everybody.
MJ Farms also bred Bridgette Bordeaux, the dam of Vintage Bourdeaux. For others, Bridgette Bordeaux finished second in the 2005 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby-RG3. MJ Farms has bred all of Bridgette Bordeaux’s foals. The mare has produced 11 winners from 13 starters, including Jess Bordeaux, winner of the 2014 New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity-RG3.
Ronald Ulibarri’s homebred Just En King (Eye Am King-U R A Fury Lady) finished second under jockey Alfredo Sigala for trainer Omar Vargas.
Daniel Torres rode White Knight (Eye Am King-Alice K White) to third for trainer James Gonzales III and owner Jose Moreno.
