WOOD BE BAD
by Michael Cusortelli
Rancho El 48 LLC’s Wood Be Bad earned his first stakes win in the $100,000 New Mexico State Fair Juvenile for state-bred two year olds at The
Downs at Albuquerque on Oct. 15.
Prepped by James Gonzales III, Wood Be Bad
covered 400 yards in :19.494 while defeating Jumpn Runn by 1/2-length. Francisco Calderon had the riding assignment.
Wood Be Bad was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms, and he was an $80,000 purchase at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding is out of Start Somethin Bad,
a daughter of Pappasito who won the 2017 La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3 at Los Alamitos, and he is a half brother to Doin Something Right, who earlier in the day won the $60,000 New Mexico State Fair Sophomore Stakes.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Wood Be Bad has won three of four starts and has banked $110,039. The gelding’s record includes a third- place finish in the $366,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2 at Sunland Park on April 1.
Jumpn Runn (Jumpn Chic-Run N Pie) earned the $20,000 runner-up share of the purse for his owner CHR Racing. Luis Martinez rode the sorrel gelding for trainer Jesus Rondan Jr. J & SM Inc.’s Bigg Deal (Big Daddy Cartel-Ms Riptide) ran third, three- quarters of a length behind Wood Be Bad. Noe Garcia Jr. rode the brown filly for trainer Fred Danley.
Wish For A King (Eye Am King-Wish You Had One To), M Eye Six (Eye Am King-The Diamond Cartel), Hide My Wine (Big Daddy Cartel-Tangled Vines), KJ Hardtookiss Two (Big Daddy Cartel-Hardtookiss), Bigg Picture (Big Daddy Cartel-Astica), Honey Bee Vike (Dashing Vike-Smafricate), and Grafity (A Royal Jess-Paint On Canvas) completed the order of finish. JM Mia was scratched.
DOINSOMETHINGRIGHT

oin Something Right prevailed at the front of a
photo finish, making it to the wire first by a head in the $60,000 New Mexico State Fair Derby Sophomore Stakes, held Oct. 15 at the Downs at Albuquerque.
It marked the first win in stakes company for Doin Something Right, a three-year-old gelding making his 16th career start. The $34,800 payday pushed his lifetime earnings into six figures at $121,399. Doin Something Right now has five overall wins for his owners at Empire Racing and Pavon Racing LLC.
With Sergio Becerra Jr., aboard, Doin Something Right broke on top emerging from the No. 4 gate, then slipped to third by the first call. The gelding recovered, leading by a head as he entered the stretch and holding on to win by that same margin.
Marco Flores trains the sophomore gelding, who covered the 400 yards in :19.514 for a 94 speed index.
Doin Something Right already was stakes- placed, finishing third in last year’s running of the New Mexico State Fair Juvenile Stakes.
MJ Farms bred Doin Something Right out of Start Somethin Bad, a 2014 mare and former Graded stakes winner with a six-figure bankroll of her own.
Flashtoglory (First Moonflash-JP Glory Be) placed second by a head for owner/trainer David Meridyth. Gerardo Vera had the riding assignment. Eye A Allstar (Eye Am King-Woodys Allstar) hit the board in third for Haskell and Jacque Rich. The Marc Jungers trainee had Christian Ramos in the irons. Followed by Deans Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Deans Dusty Bunny), Doing Something Good (Big Daddy Cartel-Start Somethin Bad), Dontmesswiththelady (Jess a Chicks-Mess Can), Jesses Wish (Jesse James Jr-Wish You Had One To), Flash Divine (First Moonflash-Girlonthego), and Firenze (Eye Am King-Flame Cafe). RC Heza Flashn Dream scratched.
FIVE BAR SUPREME
Fby John Moorehouse
ive Bar Supreme entered the Wild West
Futurity-RG3 as the top qualifier. The rookie gelding met those lofty expectations, going wire-to-wire in the $86,350 stakes final, held Oct. 22 at Los Alamitos.
Topping the qualifying ladder with a 350-yard run of :17.716, Five Bar Supreme came back and was even faster, finishing the futurity in :17.674 for a 92 speed index. The $36,267 winner’s share of the purse nearly doubled his prior earnings to a new total of $73,512.
Although Five Bar Supreme led at every call, this was a hard-fought result. The gelding broke on top from the inside starting gate, opened up a 1/2-length advantage as he entered the stretch, then held off a stern challenge from M E Ettago Relent to win by a neck.
Owned by Jorge Carmona, Five Bar Supreme posted his fifth win in seven career starts and his second victory in stakes company. The two-year-old entered black type with his win in the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass this past summer in Oregon.
Jesus Rios Ayala had the riding assignment and Lindolfo Diaz is the trainer.
Ugo De La Torre bred Five Bar Supreme out of Luv Supreme, who placed third in the 2014 version of the Golden State Million Futurity-G1.
Monty Arrossa trains both the second- and third-place finishers. M E Ettago Relent (Hes Relentless-Ettago This), the runner-up, is owned by Dave Merritt and Kim Newman. James Flores was in the irons. Pappas Missile (Pappasito-Watch Wilma Byrn), who finished third, is owned by Michael Clark and was ridden by Armando Cervantes.
The remaining order of finish was Double A Eagle (Moonin the Eagle-Just Another Hit), Slam Diego (You Drive I Fly-Coko), Interesting Talk (Seperate Interest- Little Talks), Ms Moira Rose (FDD Dynasty-Cowgirl N Up), You Cant Drive 95 (You Drive I Fly-JP Straight Shot), and Lights Out Now (The Marfa Lights-All Right Now). Cuatro Cinco scratched.
