BIG EAGLE GONE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
This stakes race raised great expectations when it was opened to Quarter Horses three years old and older. Jess Call Me Angel was the only three-year-old in the group. The rest ranged in age between four and nine years of age, including five with New Track Records in the United States - the country of origin for all entrants.
They ran over 400 yards on a fast track for a purse of $397,000 pesos ($21,778 U.S. approx.). At the time of the race, Big Eagle One was the favorite with odds of 1.35 for first place. The Cuadras Bronco Rider, Rancho Las Gaviotas and Los Gavilanes stables entered two horses each.
At the break, Cropped Top (#3) and Profitz (#5) interfered with My Sweet Pie (#4), who quickly recovered with the support of his jockey to compete for a good place at the finish line. Meanwhile, his stablemate JRS Coronas Shadow (#6) drifted out, leading the field for much of the course, until Big Eagle Gone (#9) imposed his powerful stride and youth in the final yards to snatch the lead and cross the wire a neck in front well assisted by his rider Heriberto Camacho Sotelo.
At the finish, the winner clocked a time
of :19.57 for a 91 speed index, thus obtaining his fifth victory from 12 starts, of which there have also been two seconds and one third place, adding earnings of $196,500 pesos ($10,889 U.S. approx.) to push his total lifetime earnings over $2 million pesos.
The special guest at the
award ceremony was Adriana
Gómez Barnola, the daughter
of Don José Merced Gómez
Orozco. She also works as
Manager of the Mexican
Association of Breeders and
Horsemen of Quarter Horses.
She presented the trophies to
the representative of Cuadra
La Diamantina, accompanied
by trainer Alejandro
Gutiérrez López, jockey
Heriberto Camacho Sotelo, and Carlos Gómez who is responsible for the daily management of the five-year-old horse.
Big Eagle Gone was bred by Belinda Shaw in Arizona. Foaled on March 11, 2018, he is by One Fabulous Eagle and out of the Stoli mare And Poof Shes Gone. He was consigned to the 2019 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale through Gary Haar Equine Services (Hip #107) where he was purchased by Rachuan Suarez for $34,000.
From Oklahoma, he traveled to Mexico, where he made his debut in a pair of races in the state of Chiapas. He won the consolation to the Chiapas Futurity (unofficial) and then returned to the U.S. and ran at tracks in Texas and Remington Park in Oklahoma. He was a finalist in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1 and
fourth in the Retama Park Derby, and placed second
in the Bank of America Challenge Championship-G2 at Remington Park. Upon his return to Mexico, he placed second in Revelation Classic in May of 2023 and then easily won a 300 yard allowance race at the Hipódromo de
Las Americas.
His next commitment
in stakes events will be the Mexcio Champion of Champions, scheduled for
Dec. 17, where he will surely be the one to beat. Multiple stakes winner JRS Coronas Shadow
(Coronas Leaving You-Shadow Of Colors) had an excellent race under Luis Daniel Falfán, who replaced Yair Daniel Báez Soto who is recovering from an injury. The 9-year-old stallion is owned by the Cuadra Los Gavilanes and is trained by Rubén Romo García. On June 18, he won the Javier Rosique Palavicini Classic.
Cuadra Los Gavilanes also owns third place finisher My Sweety Pie (Big Daddy Cartel-Siete Menudos), who had Martín Utrera Morales as her rider. She debuted in Mexico, on May 14 with a fifth place finish in the Revelación Classic.
Jess Call Me Angel (One Sweet Jess-Im Game Lets Play), Player X Three (Mr Jess Perry-Mischievous Player), BR Favorito Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Hawk Kue Pie), Profitz (Freighttrain B-Hasta La Veesta), Cartel Sixes (Corona Cartel-Eye For The Sixes), Jess A Reason (Good Reason SA-Jess Send Me) and Cropped Top (Corona Cartel-Tender Flyer) completed the order of finish.
