Governor’s Cup Marathon
KITE FLYER
by Tracy Gantz
Gray horses are unusual in color and frequency, which makes them stand out. So when the gray pair Kite Flyer and Bok Man battled to the wire
together in the May 19 Governor’s Cup Marathon Stakes, it was an especially colorful picture, not to mention a rematch of the April 28 Red Cell Sam Houston Distance Challenge.
When the gate popped open in the Marathon, Carry On bounced to the lead, with Kite Flyer and jockey Santos Carrizales right there. Carry On held onto his advantage around the turn before Kite Flyer poked his head in front at the top of the stretch. Bok Man put in a tremendous late run, but Kite Flyer held him off to win by a head in :45.902 for the 870 yards.
In his first two 870 attempts, Kite Flyer finished fourth, elevated to third in last year’s Governor’s Cup Marathon upon a disqualification. He followed with two victories, including in the 2011 Red Cell Lone Star Distance Challenge, and finished the
year with a third in the AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1. He ran second to Bok Man in the Sam Houston Distance Challenge.
Ryan Basham saddled Kite Flyer for the Dark Horse Partnership. Bred by Iris Buchanan, Kite Flyer is out of stakes-placed Cymbidiam. The mare has nine winners from 11 starters, including stakes win- ner Just Blink and two stakes-placed runers.
Gaspar Garcia rode Bok Man (Boknaai-One Fine Devon-TB) for trainer Jerry Jerman. Jerman’s wife, Cynthia, owns Bok Man. Carry On (Panther Mountain- Carry On Dash) finished third for jockey Luis Ramirez, trainer Yasmine Fierro, and owner Luis Delacerda.
Completing the field were Roses Three Dancers (American Brass-TB-AJ Rose), DM Traffic (Bridlewood-Ease Thru Traffic), Five Dollar Shake (Royal Shake Em-Nina K-TB), Shineys Magic T (Dreams Work-Oh My Shesa Dream), and CWS Barista (Streakin Sixes-Toffee Toro).

A REGAL PASSION
by Stacy Pigott
ARegal Passion started her career in Oklahoma at Remington Park, but has had better luck in Utah at Laurel Brown Track. There, the filly is undefeated in two starts including her latest win in the $20,570 South Valley/Swett Ranch Futurity on May 19.
Owned by Jorge Nava, A Regal Passion started her career with a seventh-place finish in a trial to the Oklahoma Futurity-G2. Her next attempt was a fourth-place finish in a $10,000 maiden claiming race where she bore in at the break.
A Regal Passion had no such trouble at Laurel Brown. She went wire to wire to win her South Valley/ Swett Ranch Futurity trial by one length, setting
the third fastest qualifying time. Returning for the finals, A Regal Passion and jockey Fernando Rojas loaded into post position seven in the eight-horse field. A Regal Passion led by a half-length early on and strengthened to the wire, winning by one length.
A Regal Passion earned $7,200 for her first stakes win, and has now banked $8,428. Nava purchased the filly for $5,200 at the 2011 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. A Regal Passion is the second stakes winner for her dam, Miss Nevada Bev, and is the mare’s last registered foal. Miss Nevada Bev also produced stakes winner Docs First Card, dam of Champion Secret Card.
In second was Aron Saenz’s Fool The Guys (Stel Corona-Fool The Boys). Jorge Garfias trains the filly, and gave the leg-up to Jesus Valenzuela. R Forte (Shazoom-Jewel Cartel) finished third with Paul Greene in the saddle for trainer Ron Moosman. B. Clark and D. Schofield own the filly.
The top three were followed by JS Ebonita (Jesses Sixes-Zelena Z Bar), BF Pieces Of April (First Prize Perry-BF April Showers), Lazy First Morn (First Down Morn-LS Lazy Money), BF Divine Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-BF Lollypop), and Stoli Girl (Stoli-Go For The Diamonds). Stars Lookin Above and Should Be Excited were scratched.
NAHR Aberdeen Futurity
JESS QUICK
by John Moorehouse
Jess Quick picked a very opportune time to break his maiden. Competing in his third career out, the gelding showed just enough speed to outnod She Has Cash and claim victory in the $15,000 NAHR Futurity held May 26 at Brown County Fair.
Jess Quick’s first win produced a $7,350 payday for his owners at Runnin Horses Dot Com, and improved the gelding’s total earnings to $7,990. Prepped by trainer Jesse Villegas, Jess Quick led
at every call of the 300-yard competition. However, victory did not come easy. The gelding broke sharply from the No. 4 gate, but She Has Cash also got off to a strong start from Jess Quick’s immediate left. Those two horses remained stride for stride to the finish. Jess Quick led by a neck going into the stretch, and made a driving finish to reach the wire first by a nose.
Jockey Chad Benjamin was aboard as Jess Quick covered the distance in :16.080. That’s considerably better than the gelding’s performance in the futurity trials, in which Jess Quick clocked a :16.640. Nonetheless, it was enough to get Jess Quick in the finals and once there, the gelding took advantage. Darrell Garoutte bred Jess Quick out of Quick Refusal, a winner of two of 11 starts on the track. Jess Quick is her only foal so far.
Villegas’ trainees pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep.
She Has Cash (Cashin Man-Sheza Rona) finished second for owner Bernard F. Dinneen. Braxton Birt-Carmouche was in the irons. Show finisher Sixs Streakin Apollo is owned by the Broken Bones Cattle Company and was ridden by Clyde Smith.
The remaining order of finish was Sixs Streakin Apollo (First N Six-Streaking Ruby Red), CC Dashin Diva (Dashin Is Easy-Adrianna Erin), Coronas Best (Corona Up-Meyers N Cash), Eyesa Special Taio (Eyesa Special Slim-Beddy Bye Doll) and KC Spanish Diamond (Week And Talent- Spanish Twist Bar). Sara was scratched.
