Victoria Ennis Memorial Stakes
LD FLASHBACK
by Stacy Pigott
Desiree Buck’s homebred LD Flashback won his third consecutive race and his first stakes race when he scored an upset win in the $25,450 Victoria
Ennis Memorial Stakes at Remington Park. Trained by Kasey Willis, LD Flashback
started his career in a maiden race, finishing fourth on March 22. He then won back-to-back futurity trials, which started his current winning streak. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the finals of either the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-RG1 or the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-RG1. Instead, he entered the Victoria Ennis Memorial on May 27.
Ridden by Stormy Smith, LD Flashback ran a
good race to win the Ennis by a neck, covering the 220 yards in :16.997. The $14,730 winner’s check improved his lifetime bankroll to $22,407. He is the richest runner for his dam, the Invisible Injun mare Invisible Jolene, who has produced four AQHA foals. Two of them—LD Flashback and U Cant See Me—are double registered with the APHA, and both have Paint race records, with LD Flashback the lone winner.
Willis also saddled second-place finisher Mean Little Sis (Coronas Prospect-Magic Misty Morning). Berkley Packer rode the filly, who is owned by John Gee and Del Craig.
Eddie D. Willis, Kasey’s father, sent out third- place finisher Nothingsweetaboutme (Sweet First Down-Dancietta). Donald Kelly bred and owns the colt, who was ridden by Jimmy Brooks.
The top three were followed across the wire by Rash For Cash (SF Royal Quick Dash-Eysa Savvy Queen), Getta Dos Of This (Dos Poruno-Royal Sooner Chick), Major Mac (Judys Lineage-Peggys Bouquet), Country Speed Dial (Country Quick Dash-Rosy Dial), Bells Country (Country Quick Dash-Bells Special), Full Country Moon (Country Quick Dash-Rosies Moon), and Act A Fool (Dos Poruno-Six Gun Teri).
South Dakota Bred Futurity
TICKLE THE IVORYS
by John Moorehouse
Tickle The Ivorys’ owner, John Johnson, laughed all the way to the bank during Memorial Day week- end. Johnson’s filly won the $15,000 South Dakota Bred Futurity on May 27 at Brown County Fair.
Tickle The Ivorys joined her dam, Luva Shake, as a stakes winner. The 1998 mare won two futurities
in 2000 and a derby in 2001, and three of her eight total victories came in stakes company. Three of Luva Shake’s foals now have distinguished themselves as stakes winners including Tenation and Brother Vern. Bob and Gary Johnson own Luva Shake, and bred both the mare and Tickle The Ivorys.
Trained by Robert Johnson, Tickle The Ivorys was the class of the eight-horse field. The filly made a sharp break from the No. 4 gate and quickly grabbed the lead. She separated herself from the competition with every stride, beating runner-up JJ Glide To Glory to the wire by a half-length margin.
Jockey Clyde Smith helped Tickle The Ivorys finish the 300-yard trip in :15.860, and collect a $7,350 payday that exponentially increased the filly’s total bankroll to $9,205. Tickle The Ivorys now has two wins in four career starts.
The other two horses who hit the board are both trainees of Herman Fennell. JJ Glide To Glory (Its Royal Time-JJ Sophisticated Sis) finished one length clear in second for owner Jerry Olson with Braxton Birt-Carmouche aboard. Thomas Anderberg owns Its a Royal Whish (Its Royal Time-Finals Dream), who took third place. Chad Benjamin drew the rid- ing assignment.
Top qualifier Charmed N Sixy (Famous Charmer-Lotta Substance), Alotta Louie (Jess Louisiana Blue-A Lotta Effort), Winnin N Grinnin (No Brakes Now-Hawktomistic), Jess Lika Blair (Call Me Corona-I Jess Lika) and Mr Imgunasteelurgirl (Its Royal Time-Mardi Gras Mambo) completed the field.
