Gillespie County Fair Futurity
OJD CHAVELA J
by Danny Camp
OJD Chavela J won her Aug. 8 trial
heat by 3 1/2-lengths to set the fastest mark for the $147,600 Gillespie County Fair
Futurity. The filly then secured a victory in the finals that were held on Aug. 23.
She stepped away from the 5-post in third under Luis Vivanco Jr. They secured second place at the first call and made a driving fin- ish to cross the wire a nose
in front. Trained by Adrian Huitron, they completed the 350 yards in :17.679 to earn a 97 speed index.
OJD Chavela J brought home the $51,660 winner’s share of the purse for owner Jorge Navarro, boosting her total career lifetime earnings to $60,978.
Oscar and Esther Diaz bred OJD Chavela J out of Idaho Cup Futurity and Florentine Handicap winner
One Prompt JJ. The mare has produced 100% winners from two starters. OJD Chavela J is her first stakes winner.
“This horse should be four for four except for a little bad racing luck,” stated Huitron. “She had never really been tested; she blew the field away in her other races.
“In the finals, she had to step up to the plate and she hit a home run. She was raised by her owners
and we brought her along slow,” he continued. “She
is chill to be around except when she gets the saddle on in the paddock. Nothing bad, just some nerves.”
When asked about was next, Huitron stated, “We are looking at Lone Star Park in her future.”
Blue Capo (Capo De Capi-S Missy Blue) was the fourth fastest qualifier and
stepped up to finish second in the finals under Victor Urieta Jr. for owner Javier Lopez and trainer Alonso Neri. The colt ran third in the GCFA July Firecracker Futurity earlier this year.
Second fastest qualifier Power Prize (Valiant Hero-Ferarri Fast Prize) earned the third place check for owner Elizardo Garcia Jr. The Jorge Barrera trainee had David Alvarez in the irons. The gelding has two wins from four starts.
A Rebels Secret (No Secrets Here-Rough Rebel), Just Call Me Sis (Carters Cartel- Justiflied), Hez Secret Glory (Hez Our Secret-Eye Of Glory), Sharks Jess Jumpin (Jumpn Chic-Ja Jess Sizzlin), OJD Lolo The Wagon (Foose-Bugs Wagon), A Political Alibi (Apollitical Blood-Ladys First Alibi) and Buford T (Capo De Capi-Rememmber Me) completed the order of finish.
