Iowa Stallion Futurity
LIL ROMANCE WAGON
by Tracy Gantz
Lil Romance Wagon broke his maiden in a flashy manner. He became a stakes winner in captur- ing the $88,475 Iowa Stallion Futurity at Prairie
Meadows on Aug. 14, and did so emphatically. Prior to this event, Lil Romance Wagon had
started twice, finishing third in a maiden race and second in his July 24 trial. That he hadn’t yet won didn’t faze him. He came away from the gate in fourth under jockey Brett Birzer, steadily moved to the lead, and then vanquished the field, winning by 1 1/2-lengths.
They completed the 350 yards in :17.901, which was good for an 87 speed index.
Alex Wessels trains Lil Romance Wagon for his father, Kirk, who races in the name of B/B Wessels LLC. Wayne Garner bred Lil Romance Wagon out of Chargin To The Lead. The mare has produced four starters, all winners, including top earner Rakin In Jo, winner of the 2017 Iowa Stallion Futurity and 2018 Iowa Stallion Derby, and stakes- placed Bettor Times. Lil Romance Wagon is her second stakes winner.
Lil Gabby J R (Talkalota Bull-Lil Puddle), ridden by Jonathan Dominguez, owned by Richard Tobin, and trained by Tony Jones, finished second. The filly has run second in all three of her races.
Jones also trains third-place Regal And Racy (Racy Casanova-Jazzin Shabby Chic) and owns him with Rick Neff. Augustin Silva rode the gelding, who ran fifth in his racing debut and third in his trial.
Completing the field were A Starry Starry Nite (Racy Casanova-Unveil), Hail Yez Darlin (Jess Racy- Hail Yez), Iris Cowboy Casanova (Racy Casanova- Pure Royal Dash), Racy Kacey (Racy Casanova-A Southern Filley), Ushouldbehere (Go To The Gravel- Pipsqueak Shazoom) and One Famous Casanova (Racy Casanova-Wishful Thinking). Ridley On The Run was scratched.
Iowa Stallion Derby
RM WRECKLESS WAGON
by Tracy Gantz
Roy and Marilyn Maupin had a homebred in the $53,395 Iowa Stallion Derby, held at Prairie Meadows on Aug. 14, in RM Wreckless Wagon. He
went off as a 29-1 longshot. But, the Maupins also had an interest in 19-10 second-choice RM Okeys Wagon as well because they also bred that runner.
At the wire, it was the two Maupin-breds just
a head apart, and the photo finish determined that RM Wreckless Wagon had won. Breaking from
the rail under jockey Ronald Hisby, RM Wreckless Wagon zipped to the lead, and he held off RM Okeys Wagon for the win. The gelding received every call of the 400 yards, finishing in :20.176 and posting an 84 speed index.
Jim Maupin trains RM Wreckless Wagon for his father, Roy, and stepmother, Marilyn. RM Wreckless Wagon had started only four times previously, and he broke his maiden in his final start last year.
The Maupins bred RM Wreckless Wagon out of lightly raced Cornish Bar. The mare has produced two winners in five starters
Lisa Baumeister owns second-place RM Okeys Wagon (Lil Kool Wagon-Okey Dokey Dixie) and third-place Haul Your Wood (Lil Kool Wagon-Fly Around Chueca). Wayne Garner trains both run- ners. Eugenio Navarrete Jr. rode RM Okeys Wagon, who placed in two earlier stakes. Ramiro Garcia piloted Haul Your Wood, winner of last year’s Iowa Stallion Futurity.
Followed by Back Stretch Dawn (Lil Kool Wagon-Hazy Dawn TB), Stormin Hot Rowdy (Maze Craze TB-Gogo For Cash), Lil Kool Lips (Lil Kool Wagon-Imindy), Sweet Game Chick (Sweet First Down-Beduinos Game Chick), Hawk Lion Stinker (Just Amazing Jess-TRS Ronas Dash), HR Sonofagun (Talkalota Bull-Pistolpaknprincess), Ryders Dream (Talkalota Bull-Indian Dream TB), and Gracies Tuition (Lil Kool Wagon-Majestic Jet Black).

PURTY DARN QUICK
by Michael Compton
Purty Darn Quick ran to his name in winning the $64,889 John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge-G3 to earn the initial stakes win of his
young career. The win also earned him a spot in the starting gate for the $125,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 on Oct. 24.
With jockey Ramiro Garcia riding, Purty Darn Quick raced in sixth position in the early stages of the 350-yard event. He rallied strongly in the lane and raced to the wire as a team with early leader Quorumm, defeating that rival by a head at the fin- ish. Purty Darn Quick ran the distance in :17.602, earning a 95 speed index.
Trained by John Hammes and owned by Hammes and the Estate of Thomas Bradbury, Purty Darn Quick improved his record to 4-2(1)-1-0. The $29,849 winner’s share of the purse swelled his bank- roll to $38,307. A winner of his trial heat on July 25, Purty Darn Quick was the fourth-fastest qualifier for the main event.
Hammes and Tom Bradbury bred Purty Darn Quick out of winner Now Margaret. Purty Darn Quick is her first starter.
Runner-up Quorumm (Tres Seis-Apollitical Pac) and Agustin Silva finished third for owner J.J. Racing and trainer Michelle Hurdle.
Synergized (Dominyun-Its Corona Thirty) closed ground late under Jorge Torres and finished third for owners Denis and Julie Schoenhofer and trainer Stacy Charette-Hill.
FDD Princess (FDD Dynasty-Viborita) was fourth and followed by Providenz (Dominyun-First To Celebrate), Signs of A Blue Moon (Tres Seis-Signs Of PYC), Patric Dash (Dashair-Tee N Me), Flirtin With Disastur (Seperate Interest-Kissa Lil), Cant Deny Her (Capo De Capi-Nolet) and Not A Secret (Hez Our Secret-Call As Maybe), who was disquali- fied for interference and moved from 5th to 10th.
