A total of 32 trials were run over a two-day period at Ruidoso Downs to determine the 10 fastest qualifiers to the $3 million All American Futurity-G1, to be contested on Labor Day, September 7, which is clos- ing day of the Ruidoso Downs’ summer meet.
August 21, day one of the trials, had nice weather with temperatures in the mid 80’s and a 3 mph tail wind to start the day, changing into a cross wind of up to 9 mph before shifting back to a tail wind that reached 10 mph at one point in the day. Two fillies and three geldings qualified to the finals on Friday from the 12th, 15th, and 16th heats. One from the inside post, one from the three post, one from the four-hole, one from the fifth and one from the seventh. The first day of the trials also saw four homebreds make it to the final event including Jettz for breeder/owner Bobby D. Cox; Famous And Easy for breeders/owners Mark & Annette McCloy; Caliente Caramelo for breeder/owner Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches; and Flash Bak, for Jim Streelman and Bill Dale and Dutch Masters III (Jim Streelman). Also, on day one: no sires had more than one qualifier; Bobby D. Cox bred two qualifiers; no owner had more than one qualifier; trainer Blane Wood qualified three; and jockey Ricky Ramirez qualified two to the finals.
August 22, day two of the trials, saw similar temperatures as day one, but with tail winds throughout the card. The day opened with an 11 mph tail wind for the first heat, then winds varied from between 6 and 14 mph. Day two saw two qualifiers come from the 2nd heat and one qualifier each from heats 3, 7 and 15. Two homebreds qualified from the second day of trials and include Apollitical Gold, who is bred/owned by Grant R. Cox Revocable Trust and Flashing My Pjs for Dennis Bowen, Susan Taylor and Jack Smith Farms, who also own the filly as Flashing My Pjs Partnership that also includes Stinebaugh Equine Enterprises, LLC. Apollitical Jess was the only sire with more than one qualifier in Apollitical Gold and HR Princess Jess, with Jimmy Brooks riding both horses as the only jockey to qualify more than one, and Eddie Willis was the trainer of both horses. There were no owners to qualify more than one horse on day two.
When we look at the qualifiers from both days of trials combined, we see that no owners qualified more than one. Trainer Blane Wood qualified three while John Stinebaugh and Eddie D. Willis each had two qualifiers. Jockeys Benito Baca, Jimmy Brooks and Ricky Ramirez each qualified two to the finals, as well.
