Flash Bak made only three starts prior to the All American Futurity trials. The gelding began his racing career at Los Alamitos with a sixth in a trial to the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity, but he did not qualify to the finals. His next out was in a trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity. Again, the sorrel gelding did not qualify to the finals, but he did break his maiden after crossing the wire first by a nose. Flash Bak then moved to Ruidoso Downs, where he ran in an allowance. Under Benito Baca, the gelding finished first by a head. Flash Bak was in the 12th trial from the first day of All American
Futurity trials. Ridden by Benito Baca once again, the gelding broke mid-pack from the inside post, drifted, and crossed the wire gamely in second for the eighth overall clocking. Trained by John Stinebaugh, Flash Bak was bred by Jim Streelman and Bill Dale and is owned by Dutch Masters III. Flash Bak is by Graded stakes winner Freighttrain B, sire of nearly $9 million. The gelding is out of 2006 Governors Cup Futurity-RG1 winner Checknbac and is a half-sibling to Grade
1 winner Cobalt Creek and stakes placed runners Distant Fury and Eagle Cry.
The third homebred from day one of the trials, Caliente Caramelo made only 1 start prior to entering the gates for the All American Futurity trials. That
was a Rainbow Futurity trial where she broke from the 3-post late and rallied throughout to prevail by a head at the wire. However, the filly was disqualified and did not qualify to the finals. In the All American Futurity trials, Caliente Caramelo had Ricky Ramirez aboard. In the final trial of day 1, the pair broke 7th after being bumped, and gained ground throughout to finish 2nd. Caliente Caramelo goes into the All American Futurity with the final overall clocking.
Trained by Blane Wood, Caliente Caramelo was bred and is owned by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranch. She is by 2-time Champion Jess Good Candy. Unbeaten from 8 starts, Jess Good Candy won both the All American Futurity (2015) and All American Derby (2016). Jess Good Candy, whose first foals are 2 year olds of 2020, is also the sire 2020 All American Juvenile qualifier Misscan- dymountain. Caliente Caramelo is out of multiple stakes winner/New Track Record setter Pandorum, dam of 2-time Champion Hotstepper and 2020 Ru- idoso Derby-G1 winner and All American Derby-G1 qualifier Hotsempting.
