Harley Greene Derby
HAND OF DOOM
by John Moorehouse
Hand Of Doom didn’t race as a 2 year old, but Brett Mennen’s gelding is proving he was worth the wait. Hand Of Doom continued his
undefeated streak through the 1st 3 outs of his career & tallied his 1st win in stakes company, coming on strong late to win the $99,800 Harley Greene Derby on June 20 at Indiana Grand.
The victory, which reaped a $54,890 payday, was part of a water-
shed race for the team of
Mennen and trainer Tony Cunningham. They also
combined to field the derby runner-up, Killer Kween, a full-sister to Hand Of Doom. Born 3 weeks apart from one another as embryo transfers, neither Hand Of Doom nor Killer Kween raced in 2014.
“He’s a pretty cool indi- vidual,” Cunningham said of Hand Of Doom, that he only started training about nine
weeks prior to this derby. “The people that broke him out west, I just appreciate the work they did. They [Hand Of Doom and Killer Kween] were ready to run when I got them.”
After setting the fastest qualifying time of :17.694, Hand Of Doom came close to matching the time in his 1st stakes event. He broke 3rd & was a close 2nd at first call behind his sister before
seizing the lead & opening 1/2-length in the stretch. Killer Kween pushed but Hand of Doom held on to win by a neck. Jose Beltran was up for the trip, which took :17.706 for a 96 speed index. The payday took his total earnings to $66,440. Hand Of Doom’s 3-race win streak included an impressive win by daylight in a 300-yard maiden at Indiana Grand in May that marked his debut.
“He got roughed up, found a hole and still wins anyway,”
Cunningham said. “Pretty impressive; the last hun- dred yards he just ran through the field. The filly, she made him run pretty hard. They’re the only 2 starters out of that stallion, I believe.”
Mennen home-bred Hand Of Doom & owns his dam Jess A Lil Bit, who has now produced 3 stakes winners topped by The Lizzard King.
Killer Kween (To Be A Corona-Jess A Lil
Bit) was 2nd under Cesar Esqueda. Beach Cartel (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee) was 3rd under Ghiovani Vazquez-Gomez for Sheri Miller & trainer Randy Smith. Followed by WB Chasin The Stone (Brimmstone-Chicks Sweet Donna), Sheza Del Rey Too (Escondido Beach-Stolia Del Rey), Ms Back In Action (Quick Action TB-Six Fols Dash), BV Fast N Furious (First Corona Home-Poety In Motion), Cant Catcha Corona (First Corona Home-Special Birthday) & DNA Dales Quick Cat (Quick Action TB-Chrystal Dale). Beach Birde scratched.
