Tricky Dust Stakes
CHASING THE HEAT TB
by Michael Cusortelli
One of four Thoroughbreds in the 8-horse field, Chasing The Heat rallied to win the $20,000 Tricky Dust Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on June 20.
Chasing The Heat covered 870 yards in :46.347, and his winning margin was 1 1/2-lengths from Flyin Fish. Enrique Gomez rode the six-year-
old gelding for owners Solitaire Stable and Lisa Dominguez and trainer Henry Dominguez.
Raced in California and New Mexico,
Chasing The Heat has won nine of 31 starts, and the $12,000 winner’s share of the Tricky Dust Stakes’ purse pushed his bankroll to $165,045.
His resume includes a second-place finish in the 870-yard Special Hank Handicap at The Downs at Albuquerque on April 17.
Chasing The Heat was bred by Brandywine Farm of Paris, Kentucky. He is one of four winners from as many starters produced by winner Chasing Lightning. Chasing The Heat is a 1/2-brother to Lovely Daniella, a two-time stakes winner at Finger Lakes Racetrack
in New York from 2009-2010, and Christina’s Gold, the runner-up in the $75,000 Staten Island Stakes for New York-breds at Aqueduct in 2009.
Second-placed Flyin Fish (Fishers Dash-Jazzing Cheree) was ridden by Brayan Velazquez for owners Tommy Galvez and Tony Sedillo, who also trains the seven-year-old gray gelding. Flyin Fish was coming off of a neck victory in the 870-yard $30,000 Fine Loom Stakes at Ruidoso on May 30. Lake Piru TB (Salt Lake- Red Neck Gal) finished third, 6 3/4-lengths behind
the winner. Ruby Gonzalez rode the 4-year-old filly
for owners Ernesto Alcoverde and Vicente Alcoverde and trainer Fernando Gamez. Completing the order
of finish were Linda Tee Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Linda Tee), Takeit Tothe Limit-TB (Wildcat Heir-Miss Shoplifter), Brady Blue Eyes-TB (Sky Mesa-Mettle), Rollickin Red (Roll Hennessy Roll-Deeheiress) and Im Royal Quick (Royal Quick Dash-Im Brendas Baby).
Vals Fortune Stakes-RG2
OPEN ME A CORONA
by Michael Compton
Appropriately enough, multiple graded stakes winner Open Me A Corona, as his name sug- gests, has on many occasions provided his connec- tions reason to throw back a cold one.
Winner of the lucrative Louisiana QHBA Futurity-G1 in 2012, Open Me A Corona has been
a gem of consistency throughout his career, and the classy 5-year-old horse added to his already impres- sive resume with an impressive victory in the $60,000 Vals Fortune Stakes-RG2 at Delta Downs on June 6.
With Saul Ramirez Jr. riding for trainer Bobby Martinez, Open Me A Corona assumed command after the break. He maintained a clear advantage through the lane of the 400-yard dash, hitting the finish line 3/4-lengths in front of long shot Eye
Get The Blues to post the win. Open Me A Corona stopped the timer in :19.673 and earned a speed index of 93 in capturing the 6th stakes win of his career.
Owned by Charles Forbes Jr. & Tommy Hays, Open Me A Corona has now won 9 of 11 starts, includ- ing 4 of 5 at Delta Downs. The $36,000 winner’s share increased his earnings to $602,542. In his prior outing, Open Me A Corona took down top prize in the John Alleman Memorial Stakes-RG3, also at Delta Downs.
Bred in Louisiana by Natalie Montgomery, DVM, Open Me A Corona is the lone stakes winner out of In the Open, a of non-winner from 2 starts.
Eye Get The Blues (Jess Louisiana Blue- Kdwantsafastone), piloted by Antonio Alberto, secured the place spot at 24-1 for Elianny Estupinan & trainer Eduardo Morales. Scooter Prize (First Prize Perry-Royal Baby Scooter) was a close 3rd under David Alvarez for Ana L. Alvidrez & trainer Martin Trejo. Followed by Fast Talkin Henry (Heza Fast Dash-Streakin Candy), Dashin Gage (Oak Tree Special-Dash Lady Love), Bipty Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Bipty Jazz TB), Perrys Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash-Ms Perrys Money) & Philips Streakin (Heza Fast Dash-Six Streakin Salute).
Miss Polly Classic-G3
SLEEPERS BEST CORONA
by Tracy Gantz
It didn’t take owner Rene Alviso-Amaro long to capitalize on the $20,000 claim of Sleepers Best Corona last April 17 at Remington Park. In only his
second start for his new connections, the gelding captured the June 27 Miss Polly Classic-G3 at Delta Downs, earning $30,000.
Sleepers Best Corona came out of the gate in fifth and moved up quickly under jockey Martin Rubalcava. Favored Dashin For A Prize challenged toward the end, but Sleepers Best Corona defeated him by a nose in :19.732 for the 400 yards.
Southern Rose Ranch bred Sleepers Best Corona in Oklahoma. For his breeder, the gelding won 5 of 10 races and ran 4th in 2 graded stakes. In his final win for Southern Rose, Sleepers Best Corona won the claiming race in which Alviso-Amaro claimed him.
Sleepers Best Corona is out of winner Call Me The Sleeper, who finished 4th in the 2004 Oklahoma Derby-G3. The mare has produced 3 winners from 4 starters, including stakes-placed Royal Snow White. The 2nd dam, Wakeup Call, is the dam of 2014 Magnolia Stakes winner Wakeup N Dash.
Last year’s Dash For Cash Derby-G3 winner Dashin For A Prize (Heza Fast Dash-Fast Prize Angie) was 2nd under Randy Edison for Oscar Edel Moreno & trainer Eric Palacio. Multiple stakes placed Heza Fast Rogue (Heza Fast Dash-Miss Jess Rogue) was 3rd under Donald Watson for Brock Broussard & Jacque Bourque & trainer Kevin Broussard. Rusty Bloom (Jet Cartel-Seattle Bloom TB) & Heasablackmagic (Jet Black Patriot-Toast Of Magic) finished 4th and 5th. Runaway Mystery (Mr Queens Mystery-Runaway Topperette) finished 6th, but was DQ’d and placed 8th, moving The Lizzard King (Valiant Hero-Jess A Lil Bit) & LD Streakin
N Leavin (Coronas Leaving You-Streakin Juanita) into 6th & 7th, with Lil Famous Dash (One Famous Eagle-Dash Master Miss) finishing 9th.
