Alabama Futurity
QUICK FOR US
by Tracy Gantz
Quick For Us put it all together in the June 26 Alabama Futurity at Delta Downs. The filly took a few starts to learn her job, but she is improv-
ing rapidly, with the Futurity for Alabama-breds being her first victory as well as her first stakes win. When the gate opened in the Alabama Futurity,
Quick For Us veered in slightly and bumped with some rivals. Jockey Danny Lavergne was able to straighten her out and went to the whip left-handed. She drifted out until late in the 330-yard race, when she ran straight to overtake the leaders and score by 3/4-length in :17.056.
Doug Weeks trains Quick For Us for owner- breeder Karl H. Smith. Quick For Us is out of win- ner Sexey Susies Secret, who has produced one other winner in four starters.
Quick For Us has started solely at Delta Downs, running an even 4th in her debut and then 7th in another maiden race. Weeks and Smith put her in the Futurity trials, where she finished 2nd to 3rd-fastest qualifier Quick Lady Patriot. Quick For Us raced her trial in :17.460 and qualified the 4th fastest.
Paris Wixon’s homebred Bigtime Fame (Bigtime Favorite-Miranda Fame) ran second for jockey Patrick Watson and trainer Kenneth Roberts. Sixth in his debut, the gelding ran third behind Quick Lady Patriot and Quick For Us in his trial. Wixon also bred and owns third-place Gemma (Teller Cartel-Ole Auntie Em), the fastest qualifier. Gemma ran third in her debut before winning her trial.
Followed by Stol Leigh (Stoli-Chica De La Luna), Corona With A Splash (Coronas Leaving You-Show Me The Splash), Jr Bigtime Shine (RT Big Time Thomas-Dance N Shine), Winnin Gold Easy (Hez Quick And Packin-Easy Win Gold), The Alabama Cartel (The Louisiana Cartel-Kisses For Us) & Quick Lady Patriot (Quick To Flare Up-JJ Lady Patriot). Pilotos Dream scratched.
Virgil Bond Stakes
TF CORONA N PASSION
by Michael Compton
Despite developing into somewhat of a distance spe- cialist, TF Corona N Passion was as a 25-1 outsider in the 870-yard Virgil Bond Stakes at Delta Downs on
June 5. The 5-year-old gelding proved the tote board wrong in the test, however, overcoming an outside draw to spring the upset for owner Renato Contreras.
Away in good order, TF Corona N Passion tracked the early pace from 3rd position in the early stages. With an outside bid, TF Corona N Passion reeled in pacesetter JLS Book of Psalms and jockey Donald Watson, getting up late to post a 1-length win. Race favorite Keepn It Kook, with John Hamilton riding, finished 3rd, another 2 1/4-lengths back.
Trained by Steven Salazar, TF Corona N Passion stopped the timer in :46.475 and earned a speed index of 87 in winning his 2nd added-money event of the year. He annexed the 870-yard Marathon Stakes at Louisiana Downs in January and subse- quently finished 2nd in the Magnolia Stakes.
The $27,000 winner’s share of the Virgil Bond purse increased TF Corona N Passion’s career bank- roll to $83,306. His slate stands at 18-6-3-2.
Bred in Louisiana by Steve Tate, TF Corona N Passion is the 3rd stakes winner out of the winning mare Pick Your Passion, who has also foaled graded stakes winner Hailfire N Brimstone and multiple stakes winner TF First Pick.
Virgil Bond Stakes runner-up JLS Book of Psalms (First Prize Perry-Psalmist) is trained by Roy Roberts for JLS Speed Horse Ranch Inc. David Lee Vance owns 3rd place finisher Keepn It Kool (First to Shine-Kool K.J. TB), who was making just his 2nd start of the
year for trainer Danny Eldridge. Followed by Cosino Winner (Cosino-Winners Never Quit- ), Downtown Forrest (Beau Brummel SA-Cece Chicado Classic), McM Zuper Man (Heza Fast Dash-Oh Shez Zuper), Eyes Your Date (Eyesa Special-Elimidate) & Toast to Lady Di (Toast to Dash-Lady Di’s Princess TB).
Golden Driller
SUDDEN SEPARATION
by Danny Camp
The weather was gloomy, but the track was sealed
and the condition was rated fast on June 14 at Fair Meadows in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was the same for everyone. Some made excuses. Some made adjustments.
Sudden Separation scrambled away from the 6-post in the 350-yard $17,500 Golden Driller. The 4-year-old sorrel filly slipped a few steps from the gate, but still received the second call. She quickly regained her com- posure and went to running. The farther she and jockey Alex Baldillez Jr. went, the more they demolished the field. The pair finished the race 1 1/4-lengths in front.
Baldillez hustled early on, then seeing the obvious he sat chilly the last half of the contest. The filly crossed the wire in :17.292 for a career high 99 speed index, taking home the $10,230 winner’s share. Sudden Separation now has total earnings of $43,487 and a race record of four wins, one second and one third from nine tries. The Golden Driller was Sudden Separation’s first try at stakes competition, and she stepped up nicely.
The filly is bred/owned by Duane Murphy, and trained by Larry Sharp. She is out 3-time stakes win- ner Okie Dokey Annie, who set a New Track Record at Will Rogers Downs for 350 yards and was named a Superior Race Horse in ’08. She has produced 100% money earners/ROM earners from as many starters. Sudden Separation is her first stakes winner.
Longshot Pyc First Prize Joe (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Joy) was 2nd under Edgar Martinez for owner/trainer Jose C. Aguilera. Love Me Madly (Fdd Dynasty-First Black Rose) was 3rd under James Flores for Dustin Cox & trainer Joe Neff. Followed by Pardnor (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Me And Me Only), Play Harder (Furrtreeous-Kitty D Ville), Cartels Hercules (Cartel Success-Spit Can Do It), Pyc Pick Your Pocket (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Bold Aldebaran), Electrafying (Real Visions-Knee High Country), Sm Miss Joy Rose (Apollitical Jess-Eyesa Country Miss) & Gee Whit (One Famous Eagle-Ally Kazaam).
