GREAT GRACE
by Michael Cusortelli
Great Grace, the ninth-fastest qualifier from the June 12 trials, sprinted to her first career stakes victory in the 400-yard $52,650 Adequan Ruidoso
Derby Challenge at Ruidoso Downs on June 27. Under jockey Joe Badilla Jr., Great Grace stopped
the timer in :19.708 and earned a sophomore-season best 92 speed index on a sloppy & sealed track. Blane Wood prepped the multiple graded stakes placed filly for own- ers George Mitchell and Bobby & Laura Mitchell.
Campaigned in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico, Great Grace has won four of 10 races. In addition to earning a berth in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3 at Lone Star Park later this year, the filly banked $24,219 to push her earnings to $183,548.
Great Grace was bred by George H. Suthers of Sayre, Oklahoma. The filly is the lone starter to date produced out of the mare Reloaded And Ready. The filly’s second dam, Easy Henryetta, ran third in the ’87 QHBC Freshman Classic-G3 at Los Alamitos and later produced Champion Four Forty Blast and Grade 1 winner Holland Ease.
Great Grace’s margin of victory was a neck from Whosa Kat (Red Storm Cat-Whosleaving Corona), a homebred gelding racing for Buddy & Patty Newsome. Jimmy Dean Brooks rode for trainer Russell Harris, who the previous day was inducted into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame. El Rayito De Luna (Red Storm Cat-Fly On The Mountain) was 3rd under Jaime Leos for owner Refugio A. Luna & trainer Juventino Ruiz. Followed by 9-5 favorite Tempting Valor (Tempting Dash-Thanks Jens), Coronas Dawn (Coronas Fast Dash-First Dawn Dash), Miss Racy Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Miss Racy Jess), He Is The Risingstar (Mr Jess Perry-Meddlin Mischief), Ms Dancing Straw (Mr Piloto-The Long Straw), and Take Off Nolan (Check Him Out-Take Off Babe). Fastest qualifier Jess Swanky scratched.

THIS CANDYS AWESOME
by Michael Cusortelli
This Candys Awesome ran her win streak to 3 races with the June 27 Higheasterjet Handicap-G3 at Ruidoso Downs. Racing for the Estate of Carl C. Pevehouse, This Candys Awesome defeated Jody Pops Zoomer by 3/4-length while covering her 350- yard trip on a sloppy and sealed track in :17.232 for
a record season-best 102 speed index. Ivan Carnero rode the homebred 4-year-old filly for trainer Clinton Crawford.
The $18,000 winner’s share of the $30,000 Higheasterjet Handicap purse pushed This Candys Awesome’s bankroll to $324,623. A winner of nine of her 15 outs, the mare was coming off of a Remington Park spring campaign in which she won two
stakes, including the 350-yard, $58,000 Decketta Stakes-G3 for distaffers on March 28.
This Candys Awesome is one of five winners from seven starters produced by Jess Send Candy. This Candys Awesome’s full sister, Send Me This Wagon, won last year’s $52,775 Canterbury Park Derby in Minnesota.
Jody Pops Zoomer (Zoomin For Bux-Jody Pops Little Sis) is a 5-year-old mutiple graded stakes winning gelding racing for Raymundo Medrano and Valeriano Racing Stables LLC. Cesar Gomez rode for trainer Toby Keeton. Ellen Kennedy Racing LLC’s Houdini (Valiant Hero-Pure Oklahoma), the 19-10 favorite, ran third. The homebred 4-year-
old gelding, who has earned $1,139,314 from 18 races, was ridden by Joe Badilla Jr. for trainer Luis Villafranco. Followed by The Ocean King (Corona Cartel-Runaway Wave), J Bar (Jess Zoomin-The Jubilee Diamond), Furiousprincess (Furyofthewind- Princess Phoebe), Jess A Lilbit Shady (Mr Jess Perry-Mongoose Effort), Fly Thru The Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Babe On The Fly), Charvet (One Famous Eagle-Bloomingdales) & Go And Get (Foose-First And Proud).
Ruidoso Juvenile
GENOVESE
by Tracy Gantz
Those who backed Genovese to win the June 7 Ruidoso Juvenile deserved the $49.60 payoff. The gelding had lost both of his starts, and his fourth in his Ruidoso Futurity-G1 trial made him the 44th- fastest on the second day of trials. But he turned it around beautifully to win the Juvenile.
Ridden by Cesar Gomez, Genovese broke eighth in the Juvenile, a race for futurity trial non-qualifi- ers. Gomez kept urging him forward, and Genovese responded, getting up in the final stride to win by a head in :17.558 for the 350 yards. It took about five minutes to determine the winner, as six heads and two necks separated nine of the 10 horses.
Kalah Welch trains Genovese for owners C. Denis and Julie Schoenhofer, who bought him for $24,000 at the 2014 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Genovese finished sixth in his debut at Remington, followed by his futurity trial.
Genovese is the 18th winner in 26 starters for his dam, multiple graded stakes winner Tiny First Effort, and he was bred by Entrust Rt Ser Inc/Fbo Tiffin in Texas. Tiny First Effort’s winners include four stakes-placed runners.
Not Holding Back (Ivory James-Coincidentally) was 2nd under G.R. Carter Jr. for Conda Maze & trainer Toby Keeton. The gelding was 3rd in his trial after break- ing his maiden. Reed Land and Cattle Co. LLC’s home- bred I No Shes A Hot Mess (Louisiana Senator-DM
Hot Hot Hot) was 3rd under Ramon Sanchez for trainer Gerald Reed. The filly had placed in both of her earlier starts. Followed by Flare For Ivory (Ivory James-Special Phoebe), Empty Arms (Tac It Like A Man-Answer
The Dream), Like A Gift (First Down Dash-American Purse), Send Me Good Candy (Good Reason SA-Roll On Candy Wagon), Stelthy (Stel Corona-Perrys Queen Bug), Luci 123 (FDD Dynasty-Eye Catcher 123) & Dash Thru Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Separate Tac). Coconut Crystal & Jess Good Candy were scratched.
