                                Cherry Creek Futurity
THREE OLIVES N SMOKE
by Danny Camp
His mother won it. His sister won it. Now, it was Three Olives N Smoke’s turn to win it. “It” being the 330-yard Cherry Creek Futurity at Arapahoe
Downs. When Three Olives N Smoke got his turn,
he did not disappoint. Breaking second from the
7-post under Stormy Smith, the 2-year-old bay geld-
ing brushed the horse to his inside. Running in short choppy strides the first half of the contest kept Three Olives N Smoke in the pack, but then his class and breeding kicked in and his stride got longer and he got farther in front. Three Olives N Smoke ended up crush- ing the field by 1 3/4-lengths, crossing the wire with
a time of :17.241. The $84,435 purse from the Cherry Creek Futurity was worth a $33,774 first place check, taking Three Olives N Smoke’s earnings to $40,984.
The gelding won his May 22 trial heat in similar fashion, the farther he went the faster he ran. He won that wire-to-wire trial by 2 3/4-lengths for the fastest qualifying time. His race record stands at 2 wins from 3 starts, running second only in his maiden start.
Three Olives N Smoke is owned Brad Thomas and breeder/owner Margo Schares and is trained by John Hammes. The gelding is out of 2-time stakes winner/Ntr setter Smokin Corona, dam of 8 winners/ ROM from as many starters, including 2 additional stakes winners. Midori N Smoke is her top earner.
Thaza Fact Jack (Teller Cartel-Alluring Streak) was 2nd under Raul Gutierrez for owner Levings Racing LLC & trainer Jose M. Barron. Glittersenoughfoshur (Shurnuf Streakin-The Glitter) was 3rd under Jose Lopez for owner Hugo Sierra Barron & trainer Jose Barron. Followed by A Beautiful Flame (Walk Thru Fire-Corona For You),
La Santita Corona (Coronas Finest Hour-La Pinguina), La Sombra Del Corona (Coronas Finest Hour-Sombra Del Caporal), Bodacious Daisy (Bodacious Dash-Dg Miss Daisy), Tsunami Sis (Wave Carver-Smash Dance), Shurnuf Shimmer (Shurnuf Streakin-Seis Star Glitter) & Baangarrang (Ivory James-Snazzy Be Kas).

BH LISAS BOY
by Danny Camp
Muhammad Ali once said, “Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the
extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.” BH Lisas Boy has been defeated, twice, but he’s won 6 of 8 starts, including the last 5 in a row. And,
it seems like he has a heart much like Ali’s because, although he didn’t look like the winner when the gates opened for the Adequan Arapahoe Derby Challenge in Aurora, Colorado, he pulled off a game victory.
It was a dreary day with a slight tail wind on June 6, yet a track listed as good. BH Lisas Boy left the 9-post generically, getting the 4th call from the gates after being crowded at the start. Then, in the last 100 yards of the 400-yard race, he drew strength from the bottom of his soul like only winners do. BH Lisas Boy crossed the wire a head in front to collect the biggest slice of the $32,670 pie, which was $15,028. That ups his earnings to $39,003. He tripped the timer at :19.634 for a speed index of 97. Francisco Giles, who was in the irons for the first time aboard the gelding, rode a great race.
BH Lisas Boy is owned by Barbara Davis & breeder/ owner/trainer Bill Hoburg. The gelding is out of 2-time winner and Grade 3 finalist Apollo Snowbound. The mare has produced 3 stakes horses from her 4 starters. 3-time stakes winner Yin Your Eyes is her top earner.
Lotta Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Getta Letta Fame)
was 2nd under Benito Baca for George T. & Judy Weldon and trainer Blake Rust. Rare Scheme (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Rarest Daisy) was 3rd under Russell Vicchrilli for Richard & Genevieve Herrman and trainer Michael- Valverde Hipolito. Followed by Sweet Solid Rock (Rock Solid Jess-Tf Lil Sweet N Easy), Stormy Red Morning (Red Storm Cat-Sweet First Jean), Dashin Cherry (Chickie Cherry Cola-Chicks Michelle), Hey Hey Hey Hey (Valiant Hero-Teller Yep), Make Em Believe (Mr Jess Perry-Shelbys Surprise), Perrys Glory (Mr Jess Perry-Personal Glory) & Jess One Kiss (Mr Jess Perry-Paint Your Lips).
Lucille Rowe Derby
TOSHI YOSHI
by Danny Camp
As they say, the cream comes to the top, and that’s exactly what happened in the $56,280 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe Park on June 6.
The track was listed as good as the 10 qualifiers from the May 22 trials loaded into the gates for the finals. Fastest qualifier Toshi Yoshi, who won his
trial in wire-to-wire fashion by 1 3/4-lengths, came
out of the 7-hole in second-place. He rattled around
a bit after breaking, but jockey Ramiro Garcia let his mount gather his feet and his wits and then went to work. Toshi Yoshi took the lead by the first call and maintained a 1/2-length advantage until the final yards when he drove across the wire with 3/4-lengths to spare.
Toshi Yoshi completed the 350-yards in :17.824, earning an 87 speed index. The sorrel gelding also took the $22,512 winner’s share, and he’s banked $85,326. His race record stands at 4 wins from 6 starts, with wins in his last 2 starts. He also won last year’s Cherry Creek Futurity and was 2nd in the Mile High Futurity. It looks like this runner has a bright future indeed.
Toshi Yoshi is owned and bred by Dana Yoshida- Orozco and is trained by Manuel Orozco. The gelding is the top earner out of 2-time winner Mairis Money Maker, dam of 100% earners from her first 2 starters.
El Carboncito (Spit Curl Jess-Illegal Native) was 1st to load & waited while the others banged around, then broke in a bit. Rider Alfredo Triana Jr. went to work and they took 2nd for Osbaldo Chacon Terrazas & trainer Miguel Pena. Whos Kissin Carter (Carters Cartel-Whos Kissin Who) was 3rd under Stormy Smith for Thomas Bradbury & Lisa Beauprez and trainer John Hammes. Followed by Now Margaret (Pyc Paint Your Wagon- Dolls Regal Choice), Feelthismomentbaby (Shurnuf Streakin-Baby La Jolla), Wavin To My Doll (Wave Carver-Shazooms Doll), Eyes For An Eye (Feature Movie-Playful Eyes), Bags Fly Free (Dream On Buster- Glow N Go Tell), Hay Jay (Ivory James-Hayleys My Name) & Short Bus (Shazoom-Snowing Money).
