Tustin Handicap
THE PERFECT LOVE
by Tracy Gantz
The Perfect Love has gotten herself into a winning rhythm that resulted in her first stakes victory. She conquered a group of 3-year-old fillies in the Tustin Handicap at Los Alamitos on June 19.
When the gate opened, all six fillies came out together. For the first half of the 330-yard race, they formed an almost straight line across the track. But, The Perfect Love began to assert her authority mid- way through with jockey Jesus Rios Ayala aboard. They drew away for a relatively easy win, taking the stakes by 3/4-length in :16.835.
Enrique Gonzalez’s EG High Desert Farms bred The Perfect Love in California and campaigns her. Last year as a 2 year old, she broke her maiden and won an allowance race in six starts. She began this year unplaced in a couple of stakes, but she got her confidence with two wins in claiming company.
Unraced Red Hot First Love is the dam of The Perfect Love. The mare has produced 4 winners in
5 starters, including 2009 Town Policy Stakes win-
ner Hawkish Got Rhythm. The Perfect Love and Hawkish Got Rhythm are both by Hawkish. EG High Desert Farms raced the 2nd dam, Coupers First Dash, winner of the California Breeders Matron Stakes-RG3 and the dam of multiple stakes winner Oh La Traffic.
Cesar DeAlba piloted Foo Who (Foose-Env) to second for trainer Juan Aleman and owner Michael Zynda. The filly finished third in last year’s Autumn Handicap and qualified for this year’s La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3. Anna MacPherson’s home-
bred AJs Annas Secret (No Secrets Here-Annas
Kiss) finished third for jockey Eulices Gomez and trainer John Cooper. An allowance winner, AJs Annas Secret also qualified to the La Primera Del Ano Derby. Followed by One More Card (Carters Cartel-Docs First Card), Run By You (Apollitical Jess-Fovee) and Walk Around Blues (Walk Thru Fire-Queens R Blue).
Alberta Bred Derby
STREAKEN TIMBER
by John Moorehouse
Streaken Timber came flying late to secure his first stakes win, snatching victory in the $31,431 Alberta Bred Derby on June 24 at Northlands Park. Shirley Laczo home-bred the three-year-old gelding who, after a winless rookie campaign, has tallied three triumphs in his first four outs of 2015. That included a 1/2-length victory in his derby trial, which saw Streaken Timber cover the 330 yards in :16.990—a time that put him fifth on the qualifying ladder. However, Streaken Timber was the fastest when it mattered most in the stakes final.
Breaking from the outside of a 9-horse field, the Les Adams trainee Streaken Timber was running 2nd at the 1st call and as he entered the stretch trailing top quali- fier Cruisinfourabruisin. Jockey Tyler Walker urged Streaken Timber into the lead, and the gelding reached the wire sporting a 1/2-length margin of victory. The stakes-winning trip took :16.890, registering a career- high 101 speed index that marked his 1st in triple digits. The win also produced a $14,286 payday that more than doubled the gelding’s total earnings to $25,961. Shirley Laczo bred Streaken Timber out of winless Streakin Jordash, whom Laczo owns. As a broodmare, Streaken Timber is her only offspring to reach the winner’s circle among 3 starters.
Stakes winner Cruisinfourabruisin (First Timber- Tagulator) was 2nd under Ruben Saenz for Barry & Janice Sather, who is also the trainer. Glenn Wills’ Bitterroot Corona (Sizzlin Red Corona-RJ Bitterroot Babe) was 3rd under Ricardo Moreno for trainer William Leech. Followed by Go Wave Up North (Wave Carver-News Alert), Glittering Wave (Wave Carver-Glitter Galore), Tequila Tuesday (Coronas Fast Dash-Keep On Keepin On), DQ’d from 4th to 6th for interference in the stretch Ode Tah Ed (Brookstone Bay-Platinum N Pearls), Saqqarah (Royal Quick Charm-Bitter Girl) & Big Hoss Rollin (Zillas Spin Doctor-Sables Val). Splashy Mamacita scratched.
Black Gold Insulation Classic
BIRDZILLAS CHARM
by John Moorehouse
Birdzillas Charm flew into black type on June 24 at Northlands Park, drawing clear late to win the $17,980 Black Gold Insulation Classic. Trained by
George Scott, Birdzillas Charm completed the race— with its unique distance of 770 yards—in :39.610 for a 110 speed index. The colt also paid handsomely at the betting window, at odds greater than 12-1 at post time.
The breakthrough win in stakes company contin- ued what’s been the best campaign yet for Birdzillas Charm. He has won 3 of his 4 outs in 2015, logging those in succession, and the $9,315 payday improved his earnings to $21,408 for owner Delton D. Gehring.
Drawing the 3-gate, Birdzillas Charm made a clean break & promptly took the lead, enjoying a 1/2-length separation as he reached the 1st call. The colt doubled his advantage as he entered the stretch and continued to widen the gap during the final yards, sporting a 1 1/4-length margin of victory as he hit the wire.
Birdzillas Charm now holds 6 wins in 19 starts. He’s gotten better with age, tallying 3 victories among 8 outs as a sophomore following a winless 7-race cam- paign as a 2 year old. Jockey Larris Allen was aboard for the trip, which made Birdzillas Charm the 3rd stakes winner out of his dam, Secret Amour. Also owned by Gehring, Secret Amour has foaled 15 offspring, 10 of whom have made starts. The other stakes winners in the brood include Zillas Secret and Miss Birdzilla.
Petes Fate (Quest Of Fate TB-Bring The Roses) was 2nd under Ruben Saenz for owner/trainer Bill Kinch. Glittering Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Glitter Galore) was 3rd under Ricardo Moreno for Rigetti Farms, Ltd. & trainer William Leech. Followed by Jess Utellum (Crimson Jess-Utellum TB), Asbigastexas (Birdzilla TB-Sables Val), Kr Howdoyoulikemenow (Scrutinizer-KR Check Me Out), My Big City Lights (Holland Ease-Hatfield’s Choice TB), Dashin Moonlark Dot (First Timber-Dot Dot And Dash), Wind River Jess (Crimson Jess-JDS Wind River) & Fast Fifty (Promised Class-Bubbles La Jolla).
