Iowa Reaches Agreement For Medication Policies
Prairie Meadows Race Track & Casino, the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission (IGRC) and the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association (IQHRA) have unanimously agreed to enforce a no-tolerance threshold policy for bronchodilators (albuterol and clenbuterol) in post-race testing for the Prairie Meadows meet beginning Aug. 15 and running through Oct. 10. New Medication Rules In Florida
Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed House Bill 239 that will require rules for the use and for allowed levels of medications, drugs, and naturally occur- ring substances in racing horses as listed by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI). The Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent
and Protective Association (FHBPA), Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association (FTBOA), Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association (FQHRA) and the Jockey Club have worked on legislation for three years to have the ARCI medication and penalty rules adopted as law. The new rules to regulate therapeutic medications and testing procedures will go into effect July 1. At the beginning of the Florida Quarter Horse racing season on Dec. 26 at Hialeah, Salix (furosemide) will be the only medication allowed on race days in the state. The maximum fine for a medication vio- lation has been increased from $5,000 to $10,000.
Youth Racing Program At Indiana Grand
The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana on June 20 held the Quarter Horse Youth Racing Experience at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. Among other things, youth aged 14-18 spent the day on an educational tour of preparing for a race, being in the paddock for race time, and obtaining a racing license. Participants heard from several guest speakers, including the official starter, and ended their day with a written exam and a night at the races. The two high- est exam scores will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the winner advances to the national event scheduled to be held Nov. 6-7 at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
