NMRC Fines Owner, Fines/Suspends Trainers
The New Mexico Racing Commission suspended trainers Lillian Silva and Tony Gallegos and fined owner Pedro Carrillo Gomez for post-race tests that showed their horses tested
over the legal threshold for Clenbuteral. Stewards suspended Silva one year and she was fined $5,000 for her third violation in 365 days when Silver Stone Bay tested well above the legal limit in a race at Zia Park on Nov. 3. Silver Stone Bay’s owner Carlos J. Sosa lost the second place purse money. Stewards suspended Gallegos 365 days and
fined him $5,000 for his third infraction when Genuine Kiss, who ran Sept. 17 at The Downs at Albuquerque, tested almost three times the legal limit. Genuine Kiss’s owner Gomez was also fined $5,000 and forfeited the purse money.
Sunland To Build New Hotel
The Sunland Park City Council on June 2 unanimously approved a $7 million dollar expan- sion project that includes a new hotel at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. The 79-room boutique hotel will feature trackside views and will house four suites all connected to the existing racetrack by a sky bridge. Construction is expected to begin in August and to be completed by the summer of 2016.
Moonin The Eagle DQ’d From Sam Houston Derby
Moonin The Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Your First Moon) has been disqualified from winning the April 25 Sam Houston Derby-G3 due to a medication violation after testing positive for clenbuterol following the April 3 trials. Volcoms Thunder (Volcom-Ill Getcha Good) has been named the official winner, with Glimpse Of Dash (Glimpse Of Greatness-Double Dash Queen) running second and On The Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-XO Kate) third.
NMRC Sets 2015-2016 Dates
The New Mexico Racing Commission (NMRC) has set the 2015-16 race season of 288 days for the state’s five tracks: Sunland Park Racetrack will host a 72-day meet from Dec. 18-Apr. 18, The Downs at Albuquerque will run 47 days from Mar. 25-Jun. 9, Ruidoso Downs will run 60 days from May 27-Sept. 5, SunRay Park will race 36 days from Jul. 1-Aug. 30, the New Mexico State Fair at Albuquerque will meet for 17 days from Sept. 8-25, and Zia Park will run 56 days from Sept. 10-Dec. 13.
Portland Meadows Announces 2015-2016 Schedule
Portland Meadows will host 37 live races for the 2015-2016 year beginning on Oct. 5, 2015, and running through Feb. 16, 2016.
SVLAC Futurity Correction
In our June 2015 issue on page 135, the winning horse of the SVLAC Futurity was listed as a gelding. BF Fooserageous is actu- ally a filly.
Wayne Brasher Passes Away
Former Quarter Horse trainer Wayne Brasher, 86, passed away June 8 in Thatcher, Arizona. A U.S. Navy veteran, Brasher trained the earners of over $1.6 million. Perhaps his most notable horse was Pies Royal Request,
who banked over $220,000 and tied the AQHA record of 14 consecutive wins. Brasher is sur- vived by his wife of 33 years, the executive direc- tor of the Arizona Quarter Racing Association Loretta Brasher, two daughters, a son, and many other family members and friends.
Edward Coltharp Passes Away

passed away at his
home on Feb. 9 in
Mayfield, Kentucky.
Coltharp, who was
born in 1927 in
Erick, Oklahoma,
was a retired orthodontist and instructor at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He was the first president of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Racing Association and was inducted into the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame in 2007. Coltharp grew up on his grandfather’s ranch. He worked with Walter Merrick and rode over 30 miles on horseback to watch Merrick match race Grey Badger II in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. According to his son Craig, Coltharp always said there was nothing like sitting on a good horse, and that he was living his dream in the years that he raced his horses. Coltharp is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bonnie Lee Fleener Coltharp, two sons, two daughters, and numerous family members and friends.
Corona Cash Dies
4-Time Champion, AQHA Supreme
Race Horse and
High Money Earning Horse Corona Cash (First Down Dash- Corona Chick, Chicks Beduino) died from complications of colic at the age of 20 in Brazil on June 21. The 1995 mare won 19
of 32 starts and earned $1,542,880 winning 11 stakes races, including the All American Futurity-G1. Corona Cash, who was bred
by Robert Etchandy, is the dam of 36 foals
to date, 27 starters and 18 winners that have earned nearly $1 million, including top earner Louisiana Corona.
