                                EIHA Derby
FOOSE SECRET
by John Moorehouse
After posting the top qualifying time for the EIHA Derby in the June 9 trials, Foose Secret came back and was the fastest of the field—and then some—yet again in the $15,200 stakes final that was held June 23 at Jerome County Fair.
In fact, Foose Secret set a 350-yard New Track Record in the EIHA Derby finals, finishing in :17.494 to surpass the :17.511 time logged last June by Merrys Cartel.
Farrol Cunningham trains Foose Secret, who won his trial heat wire-to-wire. In the EIHA Derby finals, the bay gelding broke on top from the inside starting gate on the lead.
He was never headed and led by daylight for
the entirety of the race. He sported a 1 1/4-length margin as he hit the wire, registering a blistering 107 speed index while benefiting from a 9-mph tailwind.
Jesus Valenzuela was in the irons for the record- setting run.
A three-year-old gelding owned by Jorge Murillo, Foose Secret got to the winner’s circle for the second time in 11 career starts, although this marked
his first victory in stakes company. This win also produced a $6,080 payday that increased his total earnings to $12,975.
Both of Foose Secret’s wins have come in suc- cession on the Idaho circuit this year after he went winless in nine outs during his two-year-old cam- paign—all in races held at Los Alamitos.
Roque M. Gonzalez bred Foose Secret out of Beauty Secrets, an unraced 2010 mare. She has pro- duced 100% money earners from her three starters. Foose Secret is her first stakes winner as well as her leading money earner.
Racies Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Miss Racy Racie) finished in second place under Cordarelton Benn for owners Denny and Sandy Weigt and trainer Monty Arrossa. The filly broke her maiden last year at Los Alamitos, but has been winless since.
Pickle Dilly (The Louisiana Cartel-Dilligass) and Leonardo Gonzalez were third for owner Dave Merritt and trainer Jarrett Mills. The black colt won his trial to this race and previously won both the IQHA Idaho Cup Futurity and Elko Intermountain Futurity last year.
Covington Girl (Favorite Cartel-Misterious Lady), BW De Elegant (Wagons West-BW De Stuff), Signed By The Bay (Brookstone Bay-Signed N Lipstick), Party With A Purpose (Louisiana Senator-The Party Is Hot) and Betprowless (Never Tell-Prowless) completed the field.
Roche Equine Futurity
CALIDA
by John Moorehouse
Calida picked a fine time to break her maiden, doing so in the $18,375 Roche Equine Veterinary Services Futurity at the Jerome County
Fair on June 23.
Calida scored the breakthrough victory in just
her second official start. The brown filly showed late speed and finished second in the Roche Equine Futurity trials on June 9, qualifying to the finals with the fourth fastest clocking.
Calida showed plenty of speed in her first career stakes final, finishing her 350-yard trip in :17.588 for a 104 speed index. That clocking was nearly
a second superior to her qualifying performance, which covered the same distance in :18.412.
In the Roche Equine Futurity, Calida received the third call from the seven-hole and she only got stronger as the race progressed. Calida was in the lead at the first call by 1/2-length, widening her lead to three-quarters by the time she reached the stretch. She continued to pull away and won by a full length at the wire.
Monty Arrossa trains Calida, and Leonardo Gonzalez drew the riding assignment once again
as he qualified the filly to the finals. Owner Lex Fabrizio collected a $7,350 payday that boosted the two-year-old filly’s lifetime earnings to $7,525.
Lazy Creek Ranch bred Calida out of The Fire Fly, a 2007 mare who is a five-time winner. She is also a stakes winner, capturing the 2011 running
of the AQHA Classic Bonus Challenge across the border at Lethbridge in Canada. The mare has produced 100% winners from her first two starters. Her top earner is Fuel, while Calida is her first stakes winner.
Billy The Greight (Ivory Ink-Snow Queen),
the sixth fastest qualifier, was second in the finals under Jesus Valenzuela for owner/trainer Todd D. Williams. The gelding, who is still looking to break his maiden, was a finalist in the April 27 Golden Spike Futurity at Weber Downs.
Arrossa also trains Unique Ways (Teller Cartel- Wayward Wings), who is owned by Dan Moon and had Eric Ayala aboard. Unique Ways was the fastest qualifier to this event.
Lavish Interest (Seperate Interest-Lavish Ivory) was fourth. Jess Cruizen (Apollitical Jess-Shaded In Speed) and Dealing My Corona (Corona Caliente-JD Out Dat Sock) finished in a dead heat for fifth, followed by Shes A Sweet Return (High Rate of Return-Eyesa Specialy Sweet) and Cash Closing (Im Alright Now-A Corona Day).
