PIRATE COVES HERO
by John Moorehouse
The 2019 campaign has been very good to Pirate Coves Hero. The four-year-old gelding opened the year with back-to-back stakes wins. This time, he scored a neck victory in Division 2 of the $15,000 Wayne Brasher Memorial on June 8 held at Arizona Downs, which is in the midst of its inaugural season.
The gelding made a driving finish to double
his win total in stakes company. He was running a close second at the first call, grabbed the lead and was in front by a head entering the stretch, then held off Takoradi to win by a neck. Albert Medrano was aboard Pirate Coves Hero, completing the 350-yard race in :17.587 for a scorching 108 speed index.
Julio Francisco Villar Torres owns Pirate Coves Hero, a Jesus Olivas trainee who now holds six wins in 13 lifetime starts. He came into this one riding high after triumphing in the Bank of America Turf Paradise Championship Challenge in April, in what also marked his debut in the state of Arizona.
Reliance Ranches LLC bred Valiant Hero out of lightly raced American Feature. She has produced 100% money earners from three starters. Pirate Coves Hero is her second stakes winner and top earner.
Takoradi (Ivory James-All About Ease) and Joseph Belloc Jr. were second for owner Abram Belloc and trainer Umberto Belloc. May Be Fantastic Sa (Fantastic Corona Jr-Darlin Treis) took third by a neck under Martin Osuna for owner/trainer Orlando Guerrero.
