The inaugural Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Triple Crown will not see a win- ner this year, as Lajollas Mr Big Stuff scored an upset victory in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the $109,988 Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity-G1 on August 4 at Fair Meadows at Tulsa. Lajollas Mr Big Stuff’s win came at the expense of Super Glide Harley and Ubuyillfly—the former the favored fastest qualifier and the latter the winner of the first leg of the Speedhorse Triple Crown.
Lajollas Mr Big Stuff not only had to prevail over some very formidable rivals in the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity, he also had to overcome some less-than-ideal weather on August 4. Wildfires in the Tulsa, Oklahoma, area had left the skies around Fair Meadows filled with smoke until just minutes before the race, when the wind shifted direc- tions and a deluge of rain hit the racetrack.
“It was raining so hard I couldn’t see what was going on,” said A. Jane Cullum, Lajollas Mr Big Stuff’s owner and breeder.
What was going on was that Lajollas Mr Big Stuff was running one of the best races of his career. Ridden for the first time by James Flores, Lajollas Mr Big Stuff broke quickly from post position five and immediately hooked up with Ubuyillfly, next door in the four hole. Ubuyillfly looked strong until the field passed the gap, when Lajollas Mr Big Stuff grew stronger and Super Glide Harley came up on the outside to challenge.
In the end, Lajollas Mr Big Stuff held off Super Glide Harley to win the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity by a half- length. Judys Miss Banks made a late run to
finish third, while Ubuyillfly
APHA (Country Quick
Dash-Strafing Run) finished
evenly in fourth. The
remaining order of finish
was LD Flashback APHA
(SF Royal Quick Flash-
Invisible Joene), Zoomin
Moon APHA (Shazoom-
Moonpie Marauder),
Overdosed APHA (Dos
Poruno-Sierra Sky), BP
Cartel Sunset APHA (Cartel Success-Baileys N Sunsets), Personal Ensign ApHC (Country Quick Dash-Miss Murray), and Teller Bye ApHC (Rodeo Road-You Da One).
“I was kind of nervous, because I didn’t know the jockey. I had a jockey who had never been
on him before,” Cullum said of Flores. “G.R. (Carter) had qualified him, and pulled off him to ride Super Glide Harley, which is an awesome horse. But apparently (James Flores) did good, and he pulled it off and I’m tickled to death!”
The win was the fourth for Lajollas Mr Big Stuff, and his second stakes win. The loud-colored gelding won the American Paint Classic Futurity on April 21 at Remington Park, and was fifth in the Speedhorse Graham Futurity-G1 and seventh in the Oklahoma Paint Futurity-RG1. After eight starts, he
has earned $99,712 including the $41,795 winner’s share from the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity.
“The horse has a lot of try and never gives up,” said Cullum, who bred Lajollas Mr Big Stuff out of her Paint mare McM Evelyn Lajolla. Lajollas Mr Big Stuff is the mare’s first
foal, and is the first racehorse bred by Cullum.
“I raced the mare, McM Evelyn Lajolla. She was a full sister to Linda Lajolla, who was a five-time world cham- pion,” Cullum said. “This is her very first baby, her very first runner, and my first ‘homegrown’ horse!”
McM Evelyn Lajolla was a winner and stakes finalist on
the racetrack. When Cullum decided to breed McM Evelyn Lajolla, Larry Steele stepped in and recommended his double registered stal- lion SF Royal Quick Flash.
“ I have to thank Larry Steele for saying, ‘You need to breed to Royal Quick Flash!’” said Cullum. “I had another stallion in mind, and here Royal Quick Flash was right down the road from me.”
McM Evelyn Lajolla has a yearling on the ground by Awesome Chrome, a weanling by Country Quick Dash, and is currently in foal to SF Royal Quick Flash for 2013.
As for Lajollas Mr Big Stuff, Cullum has indicated he will head to Will Rogers Downs for the 400-yard Pot O’ Gold Paint Futurity trials on Sept. 9. The finals of that Grade 1 race will be held on Sept. 29.
“We’re going to go to the Pot Of Gold and get a little more distance. I think he’ll do good!” Cullum said.
Dee Keener trained both the winner, Lajollas Mr Big Stuff, and the runner-up, Harleys Super Glide APHA. Owned by Paint Horse Queens, Super Glide Harley (Awesome Chrome-Biker Chick) was making his fifth stakes appearance, and garnered his fourth stakes placing. The gelding was also third in the Oklahoma Paint Futurity-G1, American Paint Classic Futurity, and Speedhorse Graham Futurity-G1, and fifth in the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Futurity-RG1.
G.R. Carter Jr. rode Harleys Super Glide, who had posted the fastest qualifying time during the trials on July 20. The $18,698 sec- ond-place share of the purse increased Harleys Super Glide’s career bankroll to $78,947.
Sammy and Nadine Hester own third-
place finisher Judys Miss Banks APHA (Gold Medal Jess-Judys Chicklet). The third-fastest qualifier, Judys Miss Banks previously won
the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Futurity-RG1 and was second in the Speedhorse Graham Futurity-G1. Diana Hill saddled the filly, who was ridden by Larry Payne.
