CASH FLoW CArTeL

Cash Flow Cartel definitely generated some good cash flow for his connections in the $400,000 TQHA Sale Futurity-RG2 on July
28 at Retama Park. Purchased for $23,000 as a yearling, the gelding earned $178,000 for his half-length win a year later.
Consigned to the 2011 TQHA Yearling Sale by JEH Stallion Station, Agent for Mercy Hinklins Horse Farm LLC, Cash Flow Cartel was purchased by Denis and Julie Schoenhofer. Sired by Tres Seis, he is out of the winning Corona Cartel mare Cash Cartel. She is a half-sister to stakes winner La Jolla Maid and stakes-placed Foldin Cash, out of the stakes winner Maid For Cash.
The Schoenhofers brought in partner Randy Burnett, and broke Cash Flow Cartel at their Oklahoma ranch.
“We’ve been friends for 30-some years
and he’s a partner in the KFC’s,” said Denis Schoenhofer, whose outside businesses include Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants, of Burnett. “He was a partner on Fire And Corona. After Fire And Corona, he got a little hooked.”
For no particular reason, Cash Flow Cartel didn’t go to the track until the spring, and didn’t make his first start until the TQHA Sale Futurity trials.
With Luis Vivanco in the saddle, Cash Flow Cartel led through the early stages of the race and got caught late, finishing second in his trial but still qualifying for the rich finals.
“He ran a little green, but he knows he’s a racehorse,” said Cindi Keeton, who trains
alongside her husband, Toby Keeton. “When we qualified him, Toby said, ‘We’re going to win the Futurity with him,’ and we did.”
Vivanco stepped aboard Cash Flow Cartel again in the finals and loaded into the four post in the field that was reduced to eight with the scratches of Charvet and Jetblack Gold Moment. Breaking on top, Cash Flow Cartel ran a perfect race to lead the
field from wire to wire, easily winning by a half-length in a 350-yard time of :17.612.
“He got a good, clean break and he was gone. he didn’t have to play with anybody,” Keeton said. “He left the gates hard, and he was gone from there.”
Cindi’s husband Toby was
also gone. “We were watching
on the television screen, and
when he broke like that and
was in front, I was yelling and
Toby said, ‘See you in the win-
ner’s circle!’ and left. The race wasn’t even over and he just took off.”
Sent off at odds of 7-1 as the most inexpe- rienced horse in the field, Cash Flow Cartel broke his maiden and earned his first stakes win in only his second career start.
“He almost made it look too easy,” said Schoenhofer. “(Jockey Luis Vivanco) never laid a stick on that horse. He just ran him down the track and he won.”
According to Schoenhofer, the gelding is
paid up in the Dash For Cash Futurity and the Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park, although he will likely skip the former and concentrate on the latter.
“Watching him gallop, he’s just a class act,” said Keeton. “He knows what he’s doing and acts like a racehorse. He’s fun.”
The horse that came the closest to catching Cash Flow Cartel was One
Fast Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Fast Mans Prize). Owned by Joe Flores, One Fast Wagon started her career in Louisiana, where she
was seventh in the Harrah’s Entertainment Futurity-G3. She turned in a pair of third- place finishes at Remington Park before winning her TQHA Sale Futurity trial. Jorge Barrera saddled One Fast Wagon, who was ridden by Ricky Ramirez.
Newarcos Cartel (Newarco-Kimbo Cartel) checked into third in his first stakes appear- ance. Cleto Martinez Jr. owns and trains the gelding, who was ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr.
Rounding out the field were One Eyed Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Show Me Delight), Bubba Carver (Wave Carver-Rustys Lil Lady), Mystical Carter RR (Carters Cartel-Mystical Rainbow), Snowy Vengeance (Desirio-Scarlet Snow), and Iknow Heknows Iknow (Tres Seis- Dashing Patriot).
