Garlyn Shelton GMC Truck Stakes Div. 1-rG3
CHArAL KID
by Stacy Pigott
Charal Kid has been the model of consis- tency for owner-breeder Malinche Cattle Company in 2012, finishing first or second
in all but one of his seven starts this year. He most recently won the $38,750 Garlyn Shelton GMC Truck Stakes (Div. 1)-RG3 on July 27 at Retama Park, scoring his second straight stakes win and his 12th career stakes win.
Ridden by Santos Carrizales, Charal Kid broke perfectly from post three in the seven-horse field. JA Jess Perfect had the lead at the first call, but once Charal Kid got rolling, there was no stopping him. The Streakin La Jolla gelding was in front by the time the field reached the gap and drew off to win the 400- yard race by three-quarters of a length in a time of :19.833.
Eusevio Huitron saddled Charal Kid, who earned
$23,250 to increase his lifetime total to $424,069. He has now won 17 of 43 career starts, and posted stakes wins every year since 2009, when he won the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Derby. In addition to his 12 stakes wins, he has hit the board in stakes company an additional 11 times. A track record setter and two-time Texas Hi-Point champion, Charal
Kid, now 6 years old, shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Sired by Streakin La Jolla, Charal Kid is easily the top performer for his dam, the winning mare The Special Feature. She has only one other starter, an unplaced 3-year-old of 2012.
Finishing second to favored Charal Kid was Acorn, who was the second choice in the wagering. Rose Mary Chandler owns Acorn
(Oak Tree Special-Trio Gal-TB), who is trained by Janet VanBebber. Alfonso Lujan rode the 5-year-old gelding who was third behind Charal Kid in the Miss Polly Classic Stakes
in his most recent out. A winner of 12 of 23 starts, Acorn has career earnings of $351,227 including the runner-up purse money from the Garly Shelton GMC Truck Stakes.
Raul Rubalcava’s Sunny D (Okay Dokey Dale-Sweethearts Lady) ran third under jockey David Alvarez. Christian Rubalcava trains the 4-year-old gelding who was second in the Fair Meadows Maturity in his last start.
The top three were followed by JA Jess Perfect (Mr Jess Perry-JA Curiosity), Im Dee First (Deeifrst-Im Already There), Zip N Kool (First N Kool-Zip N Streak), and Nearctica (Ocean Runaway-Especially Tricky). Jessa Kool Perry was scratched.

Garlyn Shelton GMC Truck Stakes Div. 2-rG3
KooL CoUNTrY MAN
by Stacy Pigott
Kool Country Man scored a mild upset over favored Sixes Streak when he took the $39,000 Garlyn Shelton GMC Truck Stakes
(Div. 2)-RG3 on July 27 at Retama Park.
Sent off at odds of 6-1, Kool Country Man broke slowly but cleanly under jockey Alfonso
Lujan. Favored Sixes Streak sprinted to the lead from post three and led for most of the 400-yard race until Kool Country Man made a huge late run to overtake
the field and win by a neck. His winning time of :19.920 was good enough for a speed index of 102.
Trained by Jonathan Castaneda for owner Jose Vera Jr., of Houston, Texas, Kool Country Man earned $23,400 for his sixth win in 21 starts. This is his second stakes win, as he also captured the Sam Houston Championship
54 SPEEDHORSE, August 17, 2012
Challenge-G1 three races ago. The 4-year-old Country Chicks Man gelding now has career earnings of $121,686.
Kool Country Man was bred by Ramiro Lopez and Bob Gaston, and is out of the First Down Dash mare First Kool Baby. He is a full brother to Chickie Kool, a filly who was third in the Old South Futurity earlier this year and fifth in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2.
Kool Country Man is the leading earner for his dam, who has produced eight win- ners from 10 starters. Kool Country Man’s second dam is multiple champion Kool Kue Baby, who has also produced graded stakes winners First
N Kool, Separatist Baby and Little Kool Barbie.
Making a late bid to fin- ish second was BZ Amazin Grace (Tinys First Corona- Easy Dash Miss). Ignacio
Bustamante was in the saddle for trainer Manuel Flores. Shirley Flores owns the 3-year- old filly, who won a division of the Selma Stakes in her last start and was a 10-1 outsider in this race.
The second choice in the wagering at odds
of 5-1, Runaway Trs Seis improved his position to finish third under jockey Ricardo Aguirre. P and J Racing Ltd. owns Runaway Trs Seis (Tres Seis-Runaway Cindy), who was saddled by Lewis Jordan. The 3-year-old filly was most recently fourth in the TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby-RG3.
Sixes Streak (Streakin Sixes-First
Down Sixes) faded to fourth, followed by Executive Prince (Executive Menace-Sticky N Picky), Cypress City (Brimmerton-Flowin Ease), Rawhide Legend (Dos Poruno- Crafty Lass) and Solavinosfirstroyal (Royal Always-Solavino).
