Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Derby-G1

The day before the Speedhorse Derby-G1
at Fair Meadows at Tulsa, owner Dan
Jones showed up in the Speedhorse offices in Norman, Oklahoma, and asked for his trophy. His request was prophetic, as one day later,
on Aug. 4, Jones was standing in the winner’s circle holding the Speedhorse Derby trophy after his CRM Livewire won
the $50,669 race.
“I was confident the horse
would run his race,” Jones said of his homebred colt.
And run his race he did. Ridden by Cody Smith, CRM Livewire got off to
a speedy start from post position four and trailed only early leader and favored Flashthechicks at the first call. By the time the field reached the midway point
of the 350-yard race, CRM
Livewire was in front by a neck, and held off a resurgence by Flashtehchicks to win by a head.
“The rain did concern me quite a bit,” Jones said of the massive thunderstorm that rolled over Fair Meadows just one race prior to the Derby. The track condition quickly went from fast to wet fast, a fact that didn’t slow down CRM Livewire. His winning time of :17.318 was worth a speed index of 101, and set a new stakes record for the Derby.
Trained by Matt Whitekiller, CRM Livewire is trying to duplicate his cham- pionship season of 2011, when he was the Champion 2-Year-Old and Champion 2-Year- Old Colt. Last year, he was second in the Gillespie County Fair Paint and Appaloosa Futurity, third in the Lone Star Paint and
Appaloosa Futurity-G1, and seventh in the Colors Of The Alamo Futurity-G2.
So far this year, he has finished second in the Lewis Wartchow Memorial Stakes-G1 against older horses, and won the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Derby-G1. He crossed the wire third in the Colors Of Texas Stakes-G2, but was disqualified to seventh for interference. He was also the fastest qualifier
to the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Derby during the July 20 trials.
“He’s just barely a 3-year-old. He was May 29, almost a June baby,” Jones said of CRM Livewire. “We bred him and raised him. His momma, Elaina Go Go, was a nice mare.
She run out about $30,000, and this is her first baby. Her first baby was a Champion 2-year-old and No. 1 Honor Roll Stallion
in the nation. We’re tickled. He may be the
3-year-old champion, and he could even be the world champion.”
CRM Livewire earned $19,254 for this win to increase his career bankroll to $51,990. He has now won five of 15 starts, with five additional top-three finishes.
Finishing second was another 2011 Paint champion in Flashthechicks, last year’s Solid Paint-Bred World Champion, Champion 2-Year-Old and Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding. Luis Villafranco trains Flashthechicks (SF Royal Quick Flash- Game Chicken) for owner Shirley Wheeler. G.R. Carter Jr. rode Flashthechicks in the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Derby.
Checking into third was SW Eye Candy APHA (Country Chicks Man-Ms Painted Eyeopener), a 3-year-old filly trained by Dee Keener and owned by Keener and Steve Wright. James Flores rode SW Eye Candy, who also finished third in the Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Derby on June 30.
The top three were followed by Crazy
Mother Trucker APHA (Sweet First Down-Texas Fourwinds), KC Fabulous Flash APHA (SF Royal Quick Flash-Fabulous Strawbaby), BP Cartels Paint APHA (Cartel Success-Baileys N Sunsets), Spotless Redneck APHA (Judys Lineage-Shero), Sunday Sputnik APHA (Mr Eye Opener-Ichi Star), Ivory Queen ApHC (Ivory James-Sure Nuff Fast), and Mambo Quick Step APHA (SF Royal Quick Flash-Mambo Fever).
