When good friends get together and come up with a Champion, it just doesn’t get any better. Randy Hill and his wife, Stacy Charette-Hill, partnered with Mickey Johnson on Ivoriona, who was named the World Champion Paint Running Horse of 2016. “Our dads were partners for 30 to 40 years, and we’ve been partners for about 20 years,” said Hill. “We’ve owned a couple of good ones, but nothing like this.”
Mickey and Stanley Johnson bred Ivoriona in Oklahoma, and she truly was a group project.
“We raised that filly,” said Hill, who with his wife also trained her. “From day one we knew she was special. She handles herself professionally and hits the ground easily. What I like about her most is her mind.”
Ivoriona descends from good bloodlines, being by the Quarter Horse stallion Ivory James and out of the stakes-placed Texas Hero Paint mare Friona, a full sister to Paint World Champion Texas Wildcat and Paint Champion Verona. “On the bottom side, it goes back to that Quarter mare of Herb Graham’s, Savona (the 2nd dam),” said Hill.
Graham created what is now the Grade 1 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity. Following a maiden victory in her debut, Ivoriona dead-heated with PHQ Goodbye Earl to win the Speedhorse Graham at Remington Park after qualifying the fastest. It was the first leg of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown.
Ivoriona encountered traffic trouble in her trial for the second leg, the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity at Fair Meadows, and she finished fourth. She still qualified for the final, where she finished third.
That loss meant Ivoriona couldn’t win the Triple Crown. However, she could become the 2016 Speedhorse Triple Crown High Point Champion by running well in the third leg, the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
Ivoriona conquered her rivals resoundingly in her trial by two lengths and easily qualified the fastest. Sent away as the heavy 2-5 favorite in the final, the filly took command early and came to the wire a length on top.
“She got such a good start away from the gate that it was hard to catch her,” said Hill.
That effort not only earned Ivoriona the trophy for the race, it made her the High Point Champion and brought her earnings to $127,919.
“We are really proud of her,” said Hill. “She has a lot of class. She knows what to do.”
