Painted Turnpike doesn’t like to lose. Over two seasons, he has won 14 of 17 races, and he finished second the other three times. He has collected just about every accolade available in Paint racing, and in 2016 he earned a second World Championship.
The colt is a tribute to Nolan Pevehouse, who bred Painted Turnpike in Oklahoma and races him. Pevehouse bred Painted Turnpike’s first four dams. Painted Turnpike is out of stakes- placed High Class Turnpike, a Paint Champion in 2007, and the mare’s first winner, Gitter Dun Turnpike, was also a Paint Champion.
As a 2 year old in 2015, Painted Turnpike became the first and only winner of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown. Matt Whitekiller trains the colt, who received a break between seasons at Pevehouse’s property in Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. In the middle of January, Pevehouse sent Painted Turnpike back to Whitekiller to prepare for the Remington Park season.
Painted Turnpike started the year by adding the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1 to his Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Remington the year before. With regular rider Cody Smith, Painted Turnpike clocked 350 yards in :17.238, just off Remington’s Paint and Appaloosa record of :17.232.
“The jockey told me if he had known he was that close to the track record, he might have turned him loose,” said Pevehouse.
Painted Turnpike faced older runners in three more starts at Remington. They weren’t easy tasks, especially against the talented Paint Dashin JJ. Painted Turnpike struck the first blow, defeating Dashin JJ by 1 1/4-lengths in the Paul Harber Memorial. Dashin JJ took revenge in the Mister Lewie Memorial, though, to win by 1/2-length. The rubber match, in the Cowboy & Western Heritage Handicap, proved close. Painted Turnpike prevailed, by just a neck, over Dashin JJ.
When the circuit moved to Fair Meadows, Painted Turnpike got the better of Dashin JJ again. In the Lewis Wartchow Memorial Stakes, Painted Turnpike led throughout to win by 1 1/4-lengths.
At Will Rogers Downs, Painted Turnpike scored twice in three starts. Second in the Lorelei Paint & Appaloosa Derby, he won
the Don Drake Memorial Stakes and handed Dashin JJ one more defeat in an allowance race.
“It’s a blessing to have this horse,” said Whitekiller. “He’s just special.”
