2016 Record: 7-4(1)-2(2)-0, $35,543, Lorelei P&A D., 2nd Colors of the Wind P&A S., Gillespie County Fair P&A Mat., 4th Lewis Wartchow P&A S.
Often, it takes a Champion to defeat a Champion. In 2016, Appaloosa Star Power Intent had to face two-time Paint World Champion Painted Turnpike. Star Power Intent was able to defeat Painted Turnpike one time in a performance that earned him the Appaloosa Horse of the Year title.
Star Power Intent may also be the most improved horse in the Appaloosa ranks. He began 2016 as a maiden, competing at first in the claiming ranks. He quickly burst into allowance company, and it didn’t take long before he graduated to stakes.
At Remington Park in 2016, Star Power Intent was undefeated. He broke his maiden March 25, winning by 2 1/4-lengths for a $10,000 claiming price. Against winners for a $10,000 tag on April 29, he scored again, this time by 1 1/4-lengths. Trainer Oscar Nunez then put him in a June 2 allowance race, and Star Power Intent’s winning margin was 1 1/2-lengths.
The Appaloosa met Painted Turnpike for the first time in the Lewis Wartchow Memorial Stakes-G1 at Fair Meadows. He finished fourth behind the Paint Champion.
They didn’t encounter each other again until the Oct. 1 Lorelei Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1 at Will Rogers Downs. In between, Star Power Intent collected seconds in the Colors of the Wind Maturity at Retama Park and the GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Maturity at the Gillespie Fairground.
Painted Turnpike was so well regarded that he went off as the 1-20 favorite in the Lorelei Derby. Star Power Intent, the only Appaloosa in the,
was the 30-1 fifth choice. With Paul Nieto up, Star Power Intent dueled with Painted Turnpike throughout the 400 yards. The Appaloosa bested the Paint by 1/2-length in a shocking upset.
Star Power Intent had one more chance against Painted Turnpike in a Nov. 6 allowance race at Will Rogers. But he stumbled at the start, losing all chance, and finished sixth.
Nunez trained Star Power Intent throughout the season, first for breeder Daniel Grotheer and later for his own account. Grotheer bred Star Power Intent in Kansas out of the Quarter Horse mare Power Buggy, who traces back to two-time futurity winner Barb’s Bug, Star Power Intent’s third dam. Star Power Intent is by the Appaloosa With Intent, who also sired Cant Be Caught, the 2015 Appaloosa Horse of the Year.
