Billy Montgomery Stakes
EYSA JESS JUMPN
by Michael Compton
Eysa Jess Jumpn started off this year the same way he ended his juvenile season: with a stakes win. After winning the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile
Stakes-RG2 in December to close out his 2-year-old sea- son, he resurfaced with a game victory in the $25,000 Billy Montgomery Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Jan. 19 to kick off his 3-year-old campaign.
Ridden by Guadalupe Lucio Jr. for trainer Josue Huitron, Eysa Jess Jumpn raced in fifth position early. With a strong late surge, he defeated TDZ Louisiana Toast by a neck, stopping the clock for 350 yards in :17.180, earning a speed index of 111. The clocking was good for a New Track Record.
The win marked the third stakes victory for Eysa Jess Jumpn, who annexed last year’s Lee Berwick Memorial-RG1 and the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile-RG2. This latest win improved his record to 9-6(3)-0-1 and increased his bankroll to $440,770 for owner Jose Estrada Quarter Horses.
D & S Racing LLC bred Eysa Jess Jumpn out of 2-time winner Jess Jumpn, who was a finalist in the 2012 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2. The mare has produced two winners from three starters. Eysa Jess Jumpn is her first stakes winner and top earner.
TDZ Louisiana Toast (Jess Louisiana Blue-Shes a Royal Toast) and jockey Victor Urieta Jr. were 2nd for owner Juan F. Martinez-Labstida and trainer Josue Ponce. Heza Made Man (Heza Fast Dash-Six Streakin Salute) was 3rd under Everardo Rodriguez for owner Martina Carmen Araujo Diaz & trainer Joe Davis. Followed by Cajun Cos (Tee Cos-JLS Crawfish Pie), Packin a Punch (Toast to Dash-El Streaker), Heza Magic Coronas (Coronas Leaving You-Dee Magic Patriot), Jess Run Corona (Jess Louisiana Blue-First Corona Runner), His Louisiana Dream (Jess Louisiana Blue-In His Dreams), LRH Mojo Rising (Heza Fast Dash-DRH Jamin Jackie) & Tetris B (Fast Prize Dash-Diva Eleanor).
Party Girl Stakes
SWEET BRU
by Tracy Gantz
Sweet Bru improved her already outstanding record at Louisiana Downs to three wins in
four starts when she captured the Jan. 26 Party Girl Stakes for 4-year-old and older fillies and mares. The now 6-year-old mare won both of her starts at the track in 2017. Unplaced in last year’s Party Girl Stakes, she turned that around this year with a sparkling victory as the 13-10 favorite.
Ridden by jockey Floriberto Maldonado, Sweet Bru broke well from the 6-hole. She quickly went to the lead and had a 1/2-length margin at the top of the stretch. Though several rivals made it close at the wire, she held them off to win by a neck in :17.676 for 350 yards.
Ceburn L. Baker Jr. bred Sweet Bru in Louisiana, and raced and trained her for the first five starts of her career. Jose Ortiz has owned the mare since then. In Ortiz’s colors last year, Sweet Bru won the Flying Breed Stakes and Lakeview Stakes.
Sweet Bru is the only starter out of the winning Dashin Bye mare Dashin Sweetpea. Baker trained Dashin Sweetpea for owner-breeder Debbie Freyou.
Antonio Alberto piloted Monees Fast Cash (Heza Fast Dash-Cash For Mawnee) to second for trainer Fernando Lopez and owner Elite Quarter Horses. Making her stakes debut, Monees Fast Cash has won two of 14 starts.
TF Ms Perrys Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash- Dashadee) finished in third place for jockey Bryan Candanosa, trainer Porfirio Fierro, and owner T and T Racing Stable. The 5-year-old mare has won three of 20 starts.
Completing the field were Leaving At Six (Coronas Leaving You-Six Dashers), Jess A Corona Baby (Jess Louisiana Blue-Corona Baby), Spit In My Corona (Spit Curl Jess-Fast Prize Corona), and Fastdashing Lassie (Heza Fast Dash-The Louisiana Lassie). Watergirl B was scratched.
Louisiana Downs Marathon
JES A SPITFIRE
by John Moorehouse
Jes A Spitfire claimed the first stakes victory of her career winning the $15,000 Louisiana Downs Marathon Stakes on Jan. 12.
This marked just her second start at 870 yards, but she looked comfortable at the distance, breaking on top from the 6-gate under Jose Rodriguez and leading by a head at the first call. Jes A Spitfire stayed in front by that same margin as she entered the stretch and held on to win the race by a neck, finishing in :46.310 and posting a 91 speed index. Owned by Vickie Davis and trained by her husband, Joe Davis, Jes A Spitfire led at every call of the 870-yard competition, outlasting Rakin In The Jax to reach the winner’s circle for the sixth time in her career.
The victory produced a $9,000 payday that improved the five-year-old mare’s lifetime earnings to $62,573. Jes A Spitfire finished third in last year’s running of the Streakin La Jolla Stakes and was fourth in the 2018 Miss Polly Classic-G3.
Jaime Gomez bred Jes A Spitfire out of 2003 West Texas Juvenile Stakes winner Jess Delightful, who was also fourth in that year’s Rainbow Futurity-G1. The mare has produced 100% money earners from 10 starters. Jes A Spitfire is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Rakin In The Jax (Rakin In The Cash-Alcohol And Ambiance) finished second under Luciano Duenez for owner Angela Dowden and trainer Jason Magnon.
JW Who Dat (Agouti-EW Comment) and Antonio Alberto were third for owner Giovanni Barron and trainer Eric Palacio.
Mr Desert Streak (First Down Mr Jess-Miss Desert Streak), Zoomins Jewel (Zoomin For Bux- Supers First Jewel), Dwaynes First Perry (First Prize Perry-Vals Sky High), Jessa Little Rusty (Mr Jess Perry-Rustys Quickid) & Agoutis Snowplow (Agouti- Elainas Snowplow) completed the order of finish.
