Turf Paradise Seeks University Help, State Assistance to Address Injury Spike
Turf Paradise has one of the longest racing seasons in the nation while also providing oppor- tunities for horses just starting their careers. This combination creates challenges for the track, which is why Turf Paradise has one of the most aggressive safety protocols in the nation. A recent increase in track injuries has prompted the track to call for new reforms to reduce equine deaths. During the entire 2018 meet, there were 27 equine deaths. Turf Paradise takes this very seri- ously and is proposing a series of reforms, such
as more pre-race inspections, a new commission to study horse deaths, and the elimination of flat track motorcycle racing just to name a few.

Antiparasitic Resistance Invokes FDA Request
Resistance to dewormer products has caused the Food and Drug Administration to request that animal drug companies voluntarily revise their product labels for their approved anthel- mintics used in livestock. Horse owners may want to heed the advice provided by the FDA regarding the need to engage in a targeted, evidence based worm control program for their equines that includes fecal equine control test- ing (F.E.C.T.). The FDA also noted the impor- tance of retesting F.E.C.T. after an appropriate dewormer treatment has been administered.
