To win the Grade 1 All American Futurity
is an incredible accomplishment. To do it with the only horse you have in training is even more amazing. That’s what Bill Robbins did with Apocalyptical Jess, and now he has a Champion.
Robbins breeds racehorses out of his two broodmares, but he got Apocalyptical Jess from his father-in-law, Danny Joe Miller. Miller bred Apocalyptical Jess’ first two dams: Cassandra Crest and Diamond For Leigh.
Robbins liked stakes-placed Cassandra Crest and asked Miller if he would breed the mare to Apollitical Jess and sell the foal to him.
“The day it’s born I’ll buy it from you,” Robbins told Miller.
Miller bred Cassandra Crest to Apollitical Jess twice in 2015. Miller wanted a filly, but Cassandra Crest and the recipient mare both produced colts the following year.
“I just bought the first one,” said Robbins.
The luck of the foaling date gave Robbins an All American winner in Apocalyptical Jess.
Blane Wood trained the gelding for Robbins. Apocalyptical Jess ran greenly in his trial for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 and was bothered at the start of his Rainbow Futurity-G1 trial. But, he put it all together for the big one.
Apocalyptical Jess impressed everyone in his All American trial, winning by 3 1/4-lengths
to qualify the fastest in :21.349 for 400 yards. Yet Ricky Ramirez, who piloted him that day, decided to ride Rainbow Futurity-G1 winner MM Fourinthemorning, also trained by Wood.
Raul Ramirez Jr. benefited from that decision, picking up the mount. Apocalyptical Jess repeated his trial performance, winning by 3/4-length in :21.393.
Apocalyptical Jess finished the year by winning his trial and qualifying for the Texas Classic Futurity-G1. A slow start in a roughly run final compromised his chances, and he finished sixth.
While Robbins and his family are thrilled to have an All American winner, Apocalyptical Jess has endeared himself to them in other ways as well.
“He’s like a dog that just wants to get scratched and petted,” said Robbins. “If you stop rubbing on his head and ears, he’ll kind of grab your shirt sleeve and nuzzle his head into you. He just loves the attention.”
Apocalyptical Jess and Raul Ramirez Jr. win the All American Futurity-G1 by 3/4-length.
