The team of KVN Corona, owner/breeder Keith Nelleson and trainer Paul Jones, turned in another championship run in 2018. The Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 2017, KVN Corona repeated in 2018 as Champion 3-Year- Old Colt.
Nellesen bred KVN Corona in Utah out of the mare Executive Looks in the name of his McColee Land & Livestock LLC. In accepting KVN Corona’s award, Nellesen said he realizes how difficult such honors are to win.
“We don’t have any more colts out of the mare—the mare is gone,” Nellesen said. “The problem is, I kind of want to do it again, and my wife’s afraid I’ll probably go broke trying to do that. He’s a great horse, and Paul and his team did an amazing job. It’s been a dream come true.”
KVN Corona has always been special to the Nellesen family. Nellesen named him after Kyle Van Noy, a good family friend and a linebacker for the New England Patriots.
Following his undefeated 2-year-old season, KVN Corona began 2018 in the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3 at Los Alamitos. He continued his unbeaten streak with victories in his trial and the final, overcoming some trouble in the final.
“He didn’t get away quite as good as I thought he would and kind of got brushed a little bit,” said Jones. “Two or three jumps and he was right there.”
KVN Corona scored by 1/2-length under jockey Jesus Ayala. He then extended his winning streak to nine in his trial for the Ruidoso Derby-G1, powering home by 3/4-length.
The Ruidoso Derby final and his All American Derby-G1 trial handed KVN Corona his first losses. But he soon regained his form back at Los Alamitos. He aced his trial for the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 and, though bumped early, still managed to finish second in the final.
KVN Corona is now standing his first season at stud at Lazy E Ranch.
“He’s just been a super horse,” said Jones. “He’s been a great horse to be around. He’s a real star. It was a pleasure to train him.”
KVN Corona wins the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3.
