THE FISCAL CLIFF
by Tracy Gantz
Owner/breeder Thomas Lepic of Iowa City, Iowa, and trainer Kasey Willis do well find- ing good spots for The Fiscal Cliff. That strategy
paid off once again when the 4-year-old colt scored in the July 4 Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge.
Bettors made The Fiscal Cliff the prohibitive favorite at 3-10, and he performed just as expected. With Benito Baca in the irons, The Fiscal Cliff broke in third and went right to the lead. From there he dom- inated, winning the 440-yard event by 1 1/4-lengths
in :21.725.
The Championship Challenge marked the sev- enth lifetime stakes victory for The Fiscal Cliff, who won three stakes in 2015 and one in 2016. Earlier this year, he captured the Bob Moore Memorial Stakes-G2 and Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes.
Lepic bred The Fiscal Cliff in Iowa from Signs Zoomer, a winning half-sister to stakes winners First Painted Sign and Second Painted Sign. The mare has produced four winners from six starters, including multiple stakes winner and top earner Wagon Tales.
Okeyfreight (Freighttrain B-Okey Dokey Eyes), ridden by Jorge Torres, finished second. Robert Johnson trains the 4-year-old gelding for Dean Lemburg. Okeyfreight ran second in the 2016 Canterbury Park Derby.
Johnson also trains third-place Fowl Play (Royal Shake Em-Behavin Cartel), bred and raced by Casey Foster. Elliot Bachicha Jr. piloted the 4-year-old gelding, who ran third in last year’s Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge.
