INDOMABLE CARTEL
by Tracy Gantz
Indomable Cartel has been unstoppable in his home state of Colorado. Impressive when he captured
his June 30 trial for the Cherry Creek Futurity to
qualify the fastest, he blew away the competition in the July 15 finals at Arapahoe Park.
When the gate opened for the 330-yard finals, Indomable Cartel popped out on top under jockey Fernando Fonseca-Soto. The result was never in doubt, as the colt continued to widen his advantage to 1 3/4 lengths at the wire. He stopped the timer in :17.006. The $29,872 winner’s share of the purse pushed his earnings to $33,661.
Indomable Cartel began his racing career in Oklahoma without as much luck as in Colorado. Fourth in his debut at Remington Park, he then finished first in a maiden race at Fair Meadows, but was disqualified to sixth for interference.
Francisco Cornejo bred Indomable Cartel in Colorado from unraced Tahiti Wave. The mare’s only other starter, Golondrino James, won the 2016 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe.
Hugo Barron Sierra’s homebred Shinning Bianca (One Handsome Man-Seis Star Glitter) ran second. Alfredo Triana Jr. rode the filly for trainer Jose Barron. A maiden winner in her first effort, Shinning Bianca finished second in her trial. Stormy Smith piloted Its a Blackjack (Jet Black Patriot-Alluring Streak) to third for trainer John Hammes and owner Levings Racing LLC. The colt finished third and fourth in his two starts before winning his trial.
Completing the field were Comandeered (First Down Dash-Behavin Cartel), Shine Your Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Shine N Shake), Whom (Ivory James-Whos Kissin Who), Aftershock Shake (Snowbound Shake-Baby Buckle Up), Jettin Ben (Easy Winning Jet-Nikita Ben), Yousa Good Girl (First Down Dash-Shazooms Doll) & Coronafordenim (Coronas Fast Dash-Denim Darling).
Lucille Rowe Derby
IZA CAPTAIN
by Tracy Gantz
Drawing to the middle instead of outside may have been the key to Iza Captain improving from his trial to the final of the Lucille Rowe Derby
at Arapahoe Park. Iza Captain broke outwardly in his June 30 trial, but still managed to qualify. Sent away at 6-1 for the July 15 final, Iza Captain never faltered. With Jose Ruiz aboard, he broke sharply from post six, took the lead midway through the 350 yards, and powered home on top by a length. He stopped the timer in :17.840. The $23,832 winner’s share takes Iza Captain’s earnings to $37,952 from a record of 11-2(2)-3-1.
Julio Corral trains Iza Captain for Pedro and Lillia Andazola. It was the third start Iza Captain made for Corral. The first one resulted in the gelding’s initial stakes win in the June 4 Dolls Prodigy Stakes.
Richard and Genevieve Herrman bred Iza Captain in Colorado from 2-time winner Iza Flyin Eye, who also finished third in the 2001 Cherry Creek Futurity at Arapahoe Park. The mare has pro- duced 100% winners from eight starters, including stakes winners Nifty Fury, her top earner, who won the 2015 American Flyer stakes, and Iza Sugar And Spice, winner of the 2013 Lucille Rowe Derby.
George Seward’s homebred Late N Dirty (One Sweet Jess-Dashing Diva) ran second with Alfredo Triana Jr. in the saddle. John Hammes trains the filly.
Fastest qualifier Shes My Foose (Foose-Baby La Jolla), bred and raced by Hugo Barron Sierra, ran third for jockey Pedro Gonzales. She was coming off back-to-back victories for trainer Jose Barron.
Rounding out the field were Rarest Ivory (Ivory James-Rarest Daisy), Girl With Guns (Inseperable- Hey Watch This), Perkin Desire (Desirio-Fols Perky Cat), Run With Courage (Captain Courage-Come Ready), Go Streak Lightning (Shurnuf Streakin-Seis Star Glitter), and Too Long Kissin (Stel Corona- Kiptys First Kiss). In My Dust was scratched.
American Flyer Stakes
FIGHTER GONE WILD
by Dillon Hamilton
Fighter Gone Wild nabbed his first stakes victory and fifth overall win in the $15,250 American Flyer Stakes for three-year old and older horses at
Arapahoe Park on July 22.
The four-year-old sorrel gelding broke second
from the ninth post position and retained his place in the money under Pedro Gonzalez.
The pair legged out a steady run, forced into tight quarters late by a rowdy and rambunctious field, living up to the stereotype of horseplay. But, the gelding was all business at the line. The pair crossed the wire in third, but a disqualification of the top two finishers gave Fighter Gone Wild his well-deserved place atop the podium. Fighter Gone Wild and Gonzalez finished the 400-yard fast track in :19.974, earning an 89 speed index.
Fighter Gone Wild’s $9,150 winner’s share of the purse brings his lifetime earnings to $42,852 for owner Hugo Sierra Barron and trainer Jose M. Barron. His race record is now 5(1)-4(1)-1 from 19 starts. Named the 2016 West/Southwest Hi-Point Three-Year-Old Gelding, Fighter Gone Wild also made a second place finish in the 2016 AQRA Turf Paradise Derby.
Tom Lichlyter bred Fighter Gone Wild out of lightly raced Wanna Know Now, who earned over $16,000 from nine starts in her career. The mare has produced 100% winners/ROM earners from her two starters. Fighter Gone Wild is her first stakes winner as well as her top money earner.
Im Beau Brown (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Special Smoothie) was second under Adrian Morales. The seven-year-old brown gelding is owned by Desiderio Nava and trained by Julio Corral. Im Beau Brown won the $107,820 Bank of America Remington Park Championship Challenge in 2016.
Burst Of Dash (Dashin Bye-Iza Flyin Eye) finished third under Manuel Meza. The five-year- old grey gelding is owned/trained by David Palafox. Burst Of Dash was coming off two straight victories, most recently a wire-to-wire run in the Come Six Stakes at Arapahoe Park.
IBA JP (Mr Jess Perry-IBA Special) drifted in and was disqualified from 2nd to 4th, and was followed
by Shiner Blond (Make It Anywhere-Blond Cartel) in 5th. Silver Citizen (Silver City TB-Red Alarm) was dis- qualified from 1st to 6th. The remaining order of fin- ish was Swingit Lika Man (Tac It Like A Man-Swingin Cartel), My Big Chief (Get Down Perry-Majorly Easy), JZ Zoomin Wootan (Jess Zoomin-Scootan Wootan) & Stel Surprise (Stel Corona-Making Surprise).
