by Danny Camp
It is said that everyone gets fifteen minutes of fame but it only took Bet I Make U Famous 45.967 sec- onds to become famous. That’s how long it took him
to win the 870-yard Benny Pennington Memorial at Retama Park.
He broke from the 5-post second and grabbed the lead by the first call. The sorrel gelding dueled with a driving finish to cross the wire a head in front. Jockey Alfonso Lujan was aboard for a hand ride.

More importantly, he has won his last three in a row including a win in the Virgil Bond 870 earlier this year. King William Handicap
BROOKSIDE
by Emily Blankenship
The only two fillies in a field of eight defeated the boys in the $20,000 King William Handicap at Retama Park on July 8.
The 10mph head wind didn’t hinder her speed when Brookside and jockey Juan Vasquez broke
on top from the 4-post. Brookside and Zenergetic dueled from start to finish, with Brookside win- ning by a head at the wire. Brookside covered the 350 yards in :17.565 for a 104 speed index. This marks the second stakes win for the 2016 Texas Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly. Her other stakes victory was in the Merial Sam Houston Distaff Challenge in April. She also ran third in the 2016 Retama Derby Challenge and has won two of her three starts this year.
Brookside took home the $11,800 winner’s share of the purse for owner/breeder Linda Loftis Tobias and trainer Leon Bard, pushing her total lifetime earnings to $51,948.
Linda bred Brookside in Texas out of 2-time winner I Fly American, a half-sister to stakes winners Call Me The Prince & High On Freedom. She has produced 100% winners from two starters. Brookside is her first stakes winner.
Zenergetic (Dominyun-Zenergy) led by a head until she was caught at the wire by Brookside. She took second for owner Zenergetic Group and trainer Brian Stroud. Juan Garcia Jr. did the riding.
Ridden by Omar Reyes, Cobalt Creek (Walk Thru Fire-Checknbac) was able to make up some ground for a solid third place finish for owner VWP Jr., Inc. and trainer John Stinebaugh.
A Kool Secret (No Secrets Here-A Kool Zoom), Mighty Corona Jr (Mighty Corona-Jarons Jet), Quic Carter (Carters Cartel-Quic Jess), Wishing Rock (Rock Solid Jess-Keep On Wishing), Boxin Bok (Boknaai-JBS Double Darlin) completed the order of finish.
