Garanones Derby
SOLIAT
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Soliat is another runner who, like Chics Love Curls, takes the attention of the Mexican racing community that closely follows the action of the speeders of the Quarter Mile at the Hipódromo de las Americas. Soliat has more activity competing with rivals of Mexican breeding, while Chics Love Curls is up against more imports from the United States.
In his last participation, Soliat added to his record the Garañones Derby, which in its qualifying phase had 68 participants in eight races, all of them Mexican products auctioned in 2015 at the Hipódromo de las Americas. From these trials, the sorrel Soliat imposed the best time of :17.207, closely followed by Valentino Mystery at :17.214.
The sporting streak between these runners goes back to 2016 and was accentuated in the current season when Soliat defeated, by differ- ence of a neck, the black gelding in the recent Mexico Derby. Therefore, the tone of these finals revolved around these two individuals.
With the scratching of Chai Dany, only nine finalists started. The race was clean from start to finish. Horses and riders tried to reach the 350 yards first and collect the main share of the allotted prize, which reached the record
number for this derby at $1’032,450 pesos (approxi- mately $ 56,993 US).
According to the chart
of the race, Charly Cartel
(#7) was the first to appear
from the gates, followed by
Valentino Mystery (#6) and
then Soliat (#10). While the
first runners carried out a
duel close in the center of
the track, Soliat took the
external rail to develop all his
momentum under the command of Leonardo Vidaña. Soliat managed to gain the lead by
a neck over his rival Valentino Mystery, who
in turn left Charly Cartel in third place. The clock stopped at :17.12 for a 102 speed index to the pleasure of team Rancho El Suspiro, who along with their followers, gathered in the win- ner’s circle to receive their recognition.
The winner is a gelded son of Danny Cartel out of Toles (by Ought To Be First), and
was raised in Culiacán, Sinaloa, by Cuadra
La Presita, by Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán.
In this his twelfth race, Soliat gets a ninth win and a prize of $433,628 pesos ($23,937
US), which added to his previous achievements in the Mexican Breeders Futurity and Mexico Derby, as well as in the Garañones Futurity Consolation and a second place in the Selecta Auction Futurity, totaling more than $2.5 million pesos in profits.
Soliat was saddled by trainer Antonio León Ramos, although his preparation is from the experienced Jose
Guadalupe Garcia, “Lupillo,” who was happy with this new successful result.
Second placed Valentino Mystery (Mr Queens Mystery-Valentina High) won the
2016 Garañones and Selecta Auction futurities, earning him the designation of AQHA Mexican Champion, as well as multiple recognitions by the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horse Riders. This year, he was also second in the Mexico Derby. He is owned by Cuadra Arenas, was led by Moisés González García, and is trained by Jacobo Domínguez Téllez.
In third was Charly Cartel (Watchful Vigilance-Chata Corona) with José Manuel
