Kisses To Yawl Handicap
PUDDLES CASH
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The Kisses To Yawl Handicap is the first
of the four stakes that run during the
year at the Hipodromo de las Américas at a distance of 440 yards. It is conditioned for athletes four years or older whose owners paid $40,000 pesos (approximately $2,183 US)
for nominating and registering for the race. Being a handicap, not all the participants carry the same weight according to the record of each individual and at the discretion of
the Race Department of the racetrack. In
this edition, the greater weight was assigned to Exquisite Stride, followed by Tessta Rossa and RG Golden King. At the opposite end of the weight range were Maxmilian and Master Time Dancer.
The 2017 edition was held on July 9, with 10 candidates participating in the race for a purse which reached $424,400 pesos (approxi- mately $23,163 US). There was excitement
to see the Mexican debut of Exquisite Stride,
a 5-year-old colt imported from the United States by Cuadra Cartas Blancas, carrying experience in the quarter mile, a winner of stakes and with remarkable results in his record to become the favorite in the odds. In
the group and with the same quality, was the grey Favored Fire, making an entry with A Remarkable Perry for Cuadra San Lazaro de Arará.
Preparing to measure
themselves with the imported
runners was the group of: Tessta Rossa, winner of the Clasico Revelacion and Kisses To Yawl Handicap in 2016; RG Golden King, in his stakes reappearance after a year of absence and the winner of three stakes; and Puddles Cash, Champion of the AQHA Distaff Challenge and second place in the Chirina Glorys Clasico after a disqualification in the current season. The scene of the race was flooded.
After several minutes of delay the start
was given. In his first strides, Exquisite Stride (#2) deflected outwards and obstructed
Tessta Rossa (#3), who lost his balance and in turn hit RG Golden King (#4) from behind and knocked down Jose Manuel Cisneros, continuing the race solo. Exquisite Stride went towards the inner rail and almost collided with Favored Fire (#1), losing all chance to appear in the race as expected. RG Golden
King recovered from the incident and continued to the goal, taking on to his right Puddles Cash (#5) who, through the center of the altered track, was also advancing with determina-
tion and freedom. It was a close duel between Puddles Cash and RG Golden King in the final yards, which was decided in favor of the filly by the difference of a neck.
Upon reviewing the race, the judges decided to disqualify Exquisite Stride from seventh to ninth.
Despite difficult track conditions, the win- ner recorded a time of :21.26, which gave her a speed index of 108 under the support of the effective Jockey Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, who is in his best season at the Hipódromo de las Americas .
Bred in the United States by Robert Morgan Dell, Puddles Cash is 4 years old and is by Pool and out of the Apollo Moon Cash, by Apollo TB. In her 15 races, the filly reports six victories and two second places, this being the second stakes win of this season adding
