CHICS LOVE CURLS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Quarter Horse Racing enthusiasts at the Hipodromo de las Americas are increas- ingly attentive to the performance of Chics Love Curls, a 4-year-old grey colt who has yet to experience defeat in six performances, all of them stakes. His most recent victory was in the race in honor of breeder and horseman Javier Rosique Palavicini on June 18 at a distance
of 300 yards with a prize of $331,700 pesos (approximately $17,891 US).
Being part of a group of nine 4-year-olds and older horses, the speedy runner resolved the contest in his favor from the very start in spite of having drastically lost time from posi- tion 6 towards the inner rail - under the orders of his rider Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, who kept him at the forefront. His running time in the short 300 yards was :14.92 (the local record is :14.90), which represents a speed index of 107, the highest he has ever achieved in his sporting career. He crossed the goal 1 1/2-lengths in front of the filly Jess She Thinks, who being on the right side of the track, was the closest to reaching him.
The son of Spit Curl Jess and out of First Prize Chic (by Country Chicks Man) added the sixth win to his record. He started with his debut in the Jesus “Nuchi” Jiménez Clasico in late 2015, his only official start as a 2 year old. The following year, he added triumphs in the AMCCCCM Clasico and the Mexican Derby,
as well as opening 2017 with the Inaugural Clasico in January, the Velocidad Clasico in March, and now Javier Rosique Palavicini Clasico. In this way, he has won at 250, 300, 350 and 400 yards. The reviews of his exploits have been recorded in different edi- tions of Speedhorse.
Owner Carlos Díaz de
León commented, “After
this stakes, we plan to reg-
ister in the Bank of America Championship Challenge to be held next August to test him at 440 yards.” It is a strong commitment for this fast-paced individual whose size does not seem appropriate to successfully travel the quarter mile, but it all depends on the quantity and quality of the rivals that he must face. So far, he only knows the word “success” in his career, and in any race, he is the “rival to beat.”
For this duel, $199,020 pesos ($10,986 US) was added to his earnings account, which already exceeds one million pesos, for the benefit of its Cuadra Diaz de León. He was saddled by trainer Ramon Guerrero Trejo.
Karla and Guillermo Rosique represented their grandfather Javier Rosique Palavicini dur- ing the award in the circle of winners.
Second place went to the filly Jess She Thinks (One Sweet Jess-She Thinks) for owner Rancho El Surikato under
the guidance of Juan Alberto Vallejo. Her trainer is Julio de Jesús Valencia Hernández.
Gray Wolf ZR (Separatist- Saraccuda) finished in third with Mario Alberto López at the helm for owner Cuadra Zamarrero and trainer Victor Hugo Ramírez Moreno.
Followed by A Remarkable Perry (Mr Piloto–Dashing Little Reba), Master Time Dancer (Masters Call–Dash Time), Love Zoomin (Jess Zoomin–Love Cartel),
R Dashin Free (Pappasito–R Dashin
Form), Flamazoom (Azoom–Behold Corona) & Lafishingonabugsmoon (Nofishinonafullmoon–A Special Ladybug).
