Chicaro Bill, shown here with Ronald
Mason at the Hepler Ranch, along with Flying Bob, were keys to the siring success of Chicaro. Depth Charge had success with mares carrying the blood of both stallions.
a very fast racehorse winning the 7-furlong 1929 Hopeful Stakes that is currently a Grade 1 race.
The other part of the story about Boojum is that he was unsound and infertile. He sired only 19 Thoroughbred foals and six stakes winners, including Snark, a winner of the Metropolitan Handicap, Rochambeau Handicap and Queens County Handicap
all in 1937 and the Suburban Handicap and Paumonok Handicap in 1938. Boojum sired one registered Quarter Horse, 1942 Champion Stallion Nobody’s Friend who is out of Pal by Alamo.
Boojum is sired by John P. Grier by Whiskbroom II by Broomstick by Ben Brush. The dam of Boojum is Elf, a full sister to Chicaro. Elf and Chicaro were sired by *Chicle and out of Wendy by Peter Pan.
Brigand is out of Border Jane, who is
out of Chicaro Jane by Chicaro. Thus, we
have inbreeding to the full brother and sister Chicaro and Elf in the pedigree of Border Jane.
The 1951 foal of Border Jane is race winner Lantana Queen by Depth Charge, making Lantana Queen a full sister to Brigand. Lantana Queen is the dam of Debutante Stakes winner Anaqua, who is by Beau Max.
Anaqua is the dam of the Quarter Horse Some Kinda Man by Go Man Go. Some Kinda Man was bred by B. F. Phillips, Jr.
and King Ranch, the famous partnership that bred Dash For Cash. The idea behind Phillips’ plan was to take the speed bred King Ranch mares and breed them to Quarter Horse racing stallions.
Some Kinda Man won the Ruidoso Derby-G1, Three Bars Handicap and Sunland Fall Derby where he set a New World Record of :21.46 for the 440 yards. The colt sired 211 racing ROM and 23 stakes
The presence of Domino (shown here) in the pedigrees of Depth Charge and Chicaro gives them the blood affinity for their nick.
winners from 6 crops with 398 foals and 293 race starters that earned $2,104,274, with Lotsa Soul being his leading money earner at $115,584. Some Kinda Man is
the broodmare sire of foals that earned $6,118,006 with 23 stakes winners. His daughters produced the likes of 1984 World Champion/3-time Champion Dashs Dream and 3-time Champion Kool Kue Baby.
The mating of Depth Charge and Bruja by Livery was another Depth Charge/ Chicaro nick. Bruja is out of Chicaro’s Hallie by Chicaro. Bruja was the dam of Haunted by Depth Charge. Haunted won the 1952 Cinderella Stakes and she set a New Track Record for 4 1/2-furlongs at Golden Gate Field in :52.00.
Bruja is the dam of Witch Brew by Remolino. Witch Brew is the dam of La Marga by Depth Charge. La Marga raced both as a Thoroughbred and as a Quarter Horse, finishing third in the 1950 Central Bar And Grill Futurity for QH’s and third in the 1950 Debutante Stakes for TB’s. Note: Remolino carries the blood of Ben Brush and Domino through his sire and his dam.
The 1943 foal out of Bruja by Bold Venture is Woven Web, who raced as Miss Princess on Quarter Horse tracks. Racing as Miss Princess, Woven Web was the 1946, 1947 and 1948 Quarter Horse World Champion. Woven
Web raced in Mexico the same time Depth Charge raced south of the border. She won the Campeonato De Potrancas while winning four of her six starts in Mexico.
Woven Web was bred to Depth Charge and produced Baloma in 1950. This is an inbreeding to Bold Venture, who is the sire of Depth Charge, and Woven Web, who is by Bold Venture, with a 2X2 breeding pattern. Baloma had six starts on the Thoroughbred
The same partnership that bred Dash For Cash also bred World Champion broodmare sire Some Kinda Man, shown above after setting a New World Record for 440 yards. Some Kinda Man is the broodmare sire of:
1984 World Champion/3-time Champion Dashs Dream.
AQHA’s all-time leading stakes winner/ 3-time Champion Kool Kue Baby.
