If Painted Turnpike hadn’t come along as the
first Paint Triple Crown winner in 2015, Bull might have accomplished the feat. Bull won three of his eight races, and all three of his seconds came against Painted Turnpike.
“He was always right there—there is no quit in him,” said Buddy Albin, who owns Bull. “He’s very competitive. He likes his job, and he has a big heart.”
Bull is a big colt, and he sometimes didn’t get away in perfect order.
“If Bull would ever run a straight race, it might be a different race,” said Albin. “One thing about that Painted Turnpike—he runs straight as an arrow and he doesn’t make too many mistakes. I don’t want to take anything away from the other horse. That little Turnpike horse can run.”
Bull first took on Painted Turnpike after win- ning his first race, at Remington Park. They met in the Victoria Ennis Memorial Handicap, also at Remington, and only a sliver separated them at the wire.
Next, Bull qualified the fastest for the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, first leg of the Triple Crown, winning his trial just a couple of ticks faster than Painted Turnpike did in winning his. In the final, Bull broke slowly and made up ground to finish a head and
a neck behind Painted Turnpike and Psychedelic Scott.
Bull faced Painted Turnpike again in the Triple Crown’s second leg, the Speedhorse Paint
& Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Fair Meadows. Bull couldn’t catch Painted Turnpike, but he gritted out a neck margin for second over Psychedelic Scott.
The final leg came in the Lone Star Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. Bull aced his trial, but again ran second to Painted Turnpike in the final.
“Bull broke out to the left,” said Albin. “When he broke and hit another horse, you can count three seconds before he straightened up to run.”
Trainer Randy Hill says that Bull is running straighter now, and so his 3-year-old season could prove very different. Albin acquired Bull in utero when he bought his dam, Memories Of Texas, carrying the colt, and he hopes to stand Bull at stud in 2017.
“I think he’ll make an excellent sire,” said Albin. “He’s real smart, and he’s very good to be around. There’s really never been a colored stal- lion that did what he’s done at two, except maybe
