Cant Be Caught sparkled at Remington
Park. The Appaloosa took on all comers during the meeting and came away with a perfect four- for-four record. In the process he twice defeated previous Appaloosa Horse of the Year Major Tom, earning the 2015 Horse of the Year title.
Owner-breeder John Diediker of Parsons, Kansas, pointed Cant Be Caught for the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Derby-G1 at Remington. “We only had two or three months off,” Diediker said. “I did surgery and took some chips out of his ankles.”
Cant Be Caught drew into the trial with Paint World Champion Texas Silk. With jockey Randy Wilson aboard, Cant Be Caught qualified the fastest to win by 3/4-length. Wilson was unable to ride Cant Be Caught back in the final due to injury. Cody Jensen ably deputized for him, and they won the March 21 final by 1 1/4 lengths.
“I guess his next big test will be Major Tom,” said Diediker after the race. “I think we’re going to have to go against the older horses.” That opportunity arose on April 18 in the Mr. Lewie Memorial-G1. Jensen again stood in for Wilson, and bettors made Cant Be Caught the slimmest
of favorites over the older Major Tom. The older Champion outbroke the 3-year-old, but Cant Be Caught overhauled him to win by 1/2-length. “This horse is a racehorse,” said an elated Diediker. “Major Tom had the start to beat us tonight.”
The two excellent Appaloosas squared off again in the May 31 National Cowboy Hall of Fame Paint & Appaloosa Stakes-G1. Wilson returned on Cant Be Caught, and they defeated Major Tom by a length. No Appaloosa finished ahead of Cant Be Caught throughout 2015, and he never finished worse than third. Cant Be Caught ran second to the Paint Dashin JJ in the Lewis Wartchow Memorial-G1 at Fair Meadows. At Will Rogers Downs, he finished third to the Paints Texas Silk and Shezapaintyourwagon in the Lorelei Derby-G2 and third to Texas Silk and Dashin JJ in the Talimena Handicap.
Diediker raced both of Cant Be Caught’s parents—the Appaloosa sire With Intent and the Quarter Horse mare Unique Form. “You don’t raise many like that,” said Diediker. “If you get one in your lifetime, you’re lucky.”
