Nolan Pevehouse and his late brother,
Carl, each bred 2-year-old Champion colts in 2015. Carl bred the Quarter Horse Champion Jess Good Candy, while Nolan bred the Paint Champion Painted Turnpike. Nolan went even further. Painted Turnpike became the first horse to win the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Triple Crown and added a World Championship.
The Speedhorse Triple Crown isn’t easy to win. A horse has to string together triumphs at Remington Park in May, Fair Meadows in July, and Lone Star Park in October. Painted Turnpike did that and more. He debuted at Remington
on March 6, in a trial for the Oklahoma Paint
& Appaloosa Futurity-G1. He made short work
of the trial and final, before adding the Victoria Ennis Memorial Handicap in April at Remington.
The colt had a good foundation, begun
by Pevehouse at his ranch in Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, and continued by trainer Matt Whitekiller. Pevehouse, who is in his 80s, does the initial ground training.
“In my younger years, I kind of liked a horse to buck with me a little bit,” Pevehouse said.
“I could ride a pretty wild one. I think the last time I got bucked off a horse was July 4, 1961.”
Painted Turnpike responded to Pevehouse
and Whitekiller’s lessons. By the time Remington closed, he had won five of five races there, including the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1, the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Fair Meadows became the site of Painted Turnpike’s only loss, a second in his Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 trial. “His back feet slipped two to three feet leaving the gate,” said Pevehouse. That didn’t happen in the final, as Painted Turnpike displayed “one of his better performances,” Pevehouse said.
Painted Turnpike won his trial for the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1. But to make the Triple Crown even more difficult, the night of the final, it poured rain. “By the time of the eighth race, it was just coming down,” said Pevehouse, who couldn’t even see his horse cross the finish line. His colt didn’t disappoint him, though, scoring by 1 1/2 lengths.
It was a vindication for Pevehouse’s breeding program. He has bred the first four dams in Painted Turnpike’s pedigree, coming up with a colt who has done something no other Paint Horse has ever accomplished.
