Rio Grande Señor TB Futurity (R)
Delbert Too, a gelded son of freshman sire Marking, broke his maiden in the Aug. 16, $134,667 Rio Grande Señor Futurity-R for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings at Ruidoso Downs.
Racing for owners B4 Farms LLC, Lee Owens, and Dale Alan Doby, Delbert Too went 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.20, and his win- ning margin was 3/4-length from Digger’s Gold. Alfredo Juarez Jr. rode the bay gelding for trainer Todd Fincher.
Delbert Too made his debut with a third- place finish in the second of two Señor Futurity trials on July 24. The gelding was bred by Fred Alexander, and he was a $25,000 yearling pur- chase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale.
Delbert Too became the first black-
type stakes winner from 10 starters sired by Marking, an 8-year-old Kentucky-bred son of the A.P. Indy stallion Bernardini and a half brother to Grade 2 winner Lake Avenue. Racing from 2015-16, Marking earned $426,200 from eight starts, and his record included second-place finishes in the 2015
Malibu Stakes-G1 at Santa Anita and ‘16 Belmont Sprint Champ.-G3 at Belmont Park.
Marking has sired the earners of more than $134,500.
Delbert Too’s dam, the winning 12-year- old Ghostly Moves mare On Stride, has produced three starters. The gelding’s second dam, the Master Derby mare Be Mindful, foaled two stakes winners, both
of whom were half siblings to On Stride: Bethreefullpockets, a four-time stakes winner at Sunland Park from 1998-99, and Pocketfullapozzies, the winner of the 2000 Copper Top Futurity-R at Sunland.
Delbert Too’s third dam, the unraced Better Bee mare Bet Her Name, was a half-sister
to stakes winner Clemanna. Bet Her Name produced the earners of $1,917,467, including Dusty Heart, the runner-up in the inaugural 1984 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Stakes-G1 at Hollywood Park, and Win Dusty Win, the runner-up in the ‘86 Miller High Life Cradle Stakes-G3 at River Downs in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Futurity purse boosted Delbert Too’s earn- ings to $67,734.
”I could tell in his trial race that he was closing well with both Aisle Runner and Jornalero in the mud, so I knew that Alfredo would put him in the right spot and time his ride,” said Fincher. “That’s what happened.
”This youngster will be a nice two-turn horse as he gets older,” the trainer added.
Cheese Tray finished third, 1 1/2-lengths behind Delbert Too. Jornalero, Pub, Smooth Blues, and 7-10 favorite Aisle Runner com- pleted the order of finish.
Runner-up Digger’s Gold broke his maiden with a 3/4-length win in the first Señor Futurity trial. A homebred son of Quinton’s Gold owned by Helen Nave and a full brother to 2015 Totah Stakes-R winner Mr. Digger, the bay gelding has won one of three races and has banked $29,533.
Cheese Tray races for J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, who also bred the bay son of Attila’s Storm. A half-brother to the stakes-placed Road To Heat, the gelding has earned $20,000 from three outs.
