COMIC HOT TODDY
Helen Nave’s Comic Hot Toddy, a homebred daughter of Indian Firewater, earned her first stakes win in the Aug. 16, 5 1/2-furlong Rio Grande Señorita Futurity-R for New Mexico- bred 2-year-old fillies at Ruidoso Downs.
Ridden by Shane Laviolette, Comic Hot Toddy set fractions of :21.75 and :44.50 before reaching the wire 5-lengths in front of Atill I Chime in 1:03.97. Todd Fincher prepped the filly, who earned $66,914 from her second win in three races.
”She had plenty of speed to get out and running, and when I finally got her to switch leads, we were clear,” said Laviolette.
Comic Hot Toddy became the fifth black- type stakes winner from 74 starters sired by Indian Firewater, a Grade 2-winning son of 1998 Santa Anita Derby-G1 winner Indian Charlie, who earned $339,242 and had three wins, including the 1 1/16-mile, $150,000 San Fernando Stakes-G2 at Santa Anita Park. Indian Firewater has sired the earners of more than $2.3 million from five crops.
Comic Hot Toddy is one of three win- ners from as many starters produced by Comicsperfectstorm, a homebred daughter of Comic Genius who won four stakes in New Mexico from 2010-11, including the 2010 Rio
Grande Señorita Futurity-R at Ruidoso Downs, and the ‘11 New Mexico Cup Fillies Champ.-R at Zia Park. Comic Hot Toddy is a half sister
to Comic Hot Rod, a son of Abstraction who ran second in the 2018 Rio Grande Señor Futurity-R.
Comic Hot Toddy’s second dam, the win- ning Devon Lane mare Cats Bounty, foaled four starters, including Comic Smarty Cat, a full brother to Comicsperfectstorm, who ran third in the 2011 Sierra Blanca Handicap-R at Ruidoso Downs.
Comic Hot Toddy made her debut with a clear 8-length victory in a 5-furlong maiden-special-weight race for state-bred 2 year olds at Ruidoso on July 11. The filly has banked $73,414.
”This filly has a big heart, and she wants to compete,” said Fincher. “She doesn’t show us that much in the morning, but when she got tested today she moved right along.
”She’s got some talent for being so young,” the trainer added.
Bully Baby finished third, 7 3/4-lengths behind Comic Hot Toddy, and was followed by 5-2 favorite Fill The Bill, Speedy Wildcat, Indian Fireblossom, The Pacesetter, and Our Soaring Angel.
Runner-up Atill I Chime made his debut with a wire-to-wire, 1/2-length win in a first
of three Señorita Futurity trials. A homebred daughter of Attila’s Storm and ‘07 Rio Grande Señorita Futurity-R winner Pocketfullachime owned by Pierre and Leslie Amestoy, the filly increased her earnings to $29,166 from two outs.
Bully Baby races for J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas, which purchased the daughter of Diabolical and the multipile stakes winning King Bull mare Shamrock Girl for $50,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The $16,059 third-place share of the Señorita Futurity purse pushed the bay filly’s bankroll to $21,710 from four starts.
